Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Barbie became such a massive cultural phenomenon that it is difficult to imagine another actress playing the role in the pink world. Whether it was the nostalgia of Barbie Land or the massive hype built by the film’s global marketing campaign, Barbie became one of the biggest releases of 2023. The movie sparked new trends and renewed love for the iconic doll while also challenging traditional gender stereotypes.

However, as surprising as it may sound, Robbie was not the first choice to play Barbie. Gal Gadot was the first choice, but several elements prevented the Wonder Woman actress from playing the role. But despite missing out on the role, Gadot does not seem to regret the situation.

After Barbie producer, Margot Robbie revealed in an interview with Vogue that Gal Gadot was the first choice to play Barbie, the Wonder Woman actress expressed her gratitude, admitting that the news warmed her heart. However, as Gadot recently explained on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, scheduling conflicts may have prevented her from taking on the role. However, the actress has no regrets, calling Robbie the perfect choice to play Barbie.

“But I'm so humbled and grateful for Margot to think about me, and I'm so grateful that Margo did the role because it was incredible,” Gadot said about Margot Robbie playing the role of Barbie.

She admitted that she was filming two projects at the time, which may have contributed to the scheduling conflicts. However, Gadot appeared interested when the host brought up Barbie 2. So, fingers will be crossed that the actress could join the franchise if the sequel gets the green light. While Gadot may not have been part of Barbie, her persona was reportedly a calling card for the casting directors as they searched for the perfect actors to join the movie.

Much like Gadot, there are several other surprising names who could not make an appearance in the movie.

In a conversation with CinemaBlend, Barbie director Greta Gerwig revealed that she wanted Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan to make special cameos in the film. Gerwig had previously worked with both actors in Lady Bird and Little Women, and she hoped to reunite with them for the project. However, neither actor was able to take up the cameo roles.

“It was going to be a specialty cameo,” Gerwig said. “I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy. Both of them couldn’t do it and I was so annoyed.

Moreover, while Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu played different versions of Ken in Barbie, several other surprising faces were also considered for the role. As per the casting directors (reported by Variety), Bowen Yang, Dan Levy, and Ben Platt were all in the running to play a version of Ken. While their absence was certainly a missed opportunity, a potential sequel gives hope of seeing these actors join Barbie Land.
