Steven Spielberg has revealed that he walked away from directing the first Harry Potter film so he could take over A.I. Artificial Intelligence, the long-gestating project originally developed by Stanley Kubrick. At the time, Harry Potter was already on its way to becoming a cultural phenomenon. The adaptation represented one of the most coveted directing opportunities in Hollywood and would eventually launch one of the most successful film franchises ever created.

Spielberg's involvement has remained a source of fascination for fans over the years. His latest comments offer a clearer picture of why he ultimately chose a very different path.

Speaking with TCM, Steven Spielberg recalled that Harry Potter was originally lined up as his next directing project before circumstances surrounding another film changed his plans.

"I actually walked away from Harry Potter, which I was scheduled to direct as my next movie. I had cast some of the older actors, I had made casting suggestions, I gave it up and it was gonna be a huge movie because the book was already a runaway cultural phenomenon... I gave that up to essentially do AI," Spielberg shared with TCM.

According to Spielberg, the decision came after Stanley Kubrick's death, when Kubrick's wife Christiane and longtime producing partner Jan Harlan approached him about taking over A.I. Artificial Intelligence. The science-fiction project had been in development for years and was one of Kubrick's most ambitious unfinished works.

For Spielberg, completing the film became more than just another directing assignment. It was an opportunity to bring a story closely associated with one of cinema's most influential filmmakers to the screen. That commitment ultimately led him to walk away from Harry Potter, despite already being involved in the project's early development.

Yet Spielberg has also revealed that professional considerations were only part of the story.

What else made Steven Spielberg walk away from Hogwarts?

Speaking during a conversation with filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli for Reliance Entertainment, Steven Spielberg explained that family played a major role in the choices he was making at that stage of his career.

"There were several films I chose not to make. They offered me Harry Potter. I chose to turn down the first Harry Potter so I could spend that next year and a half with my family, my young kids growing up. So I sacrificed a great franchise, which today looking back I'm very happy to have done, to be with my family," Spielberg said.

The filmmaker went on to describe how balancing artistic ambitions with family life became increasingly difficult as his children grew older. Long productions often required months away from home, forcing him to weigh career opportunities against time he could never get back.

More than two decades later, Spielberg appears to have no regrets about the choice. While Harry Potter became a global phenomenon, his comments suggest the decision was shaped by both a desire to complete Kubrick's unfinished vision and a determination to be present for his family. Those priorities continue to influence his latest sci-fi return, which sees the filmmaker revisiting themes that have defined much of his career.
