How SAG-AFTRA Stood Firm With Meghan Markle Post the Oprah Winfrey Bombshell

The royal family and their periodic bombshell interviews have become synonymous with each other. Despite the strict protocols that come binding on the core members of the House of Windsor, there have always been groundbreaking forces of change against oppression and generality. Be it Princess Diana or Meghan Markle Not being able to put up with the royal ethos, these women have forever been the architect of their own destinies.

In current times Duchess Markle has been the trailblazer of the said movement. And although she had it tough with the royalties, renowned charitable endeavors, and eminent media unions had her back.

The SAG-AFTRA Union supported Meghan Markle during times of peril

Speaking of revolutionary unions, the Screen Actors Guild and American–Federation of Television and Radio Artists have been in full swing. SAG-AFTRA by nature represents the USA TV network personalities, which also include bygone actresses like Meghan Markle. The former American actress is known to be one of the most controversial and scrutinized entities in the West. Thus, the federation stood tall with the now royal when she need them the most. 

The year 2021 was marked by never-before global happenings that took us by storm. Among them, all was Prince Harry‘s and Meghan Markle’s much-talked-about interview with Oprah Winfrey. The sit-down shed light on some of the forbidden chapters of their lifestyle in the Palace. And when the public started to get down the Sussexes at their throat, the SAG-AFTRA committee had her back. Taking to Twitter the federation wrote, “We are still here for you, Meghan.” “Everyone deserves the protection of a union,” it further added.

This is the first time both the SAG and Writers’ Guild of America has been on strike consecutively since 1960. With a heavy writer’s protest in Los Angeles and New York, many Hollywood stars have joined the protest. The intensity of the protest has been prevalent so much, that the highly anticipated movie of the year, Oppenheimer, had its cast abandon the London premiere and join the strike. 

The reason behind the mass protest comes after negotiations with studios over a new contract collapsed. Moreover, things went messy as streaming platforms and artificial intelligence stood at the center of the standoff. The dispute pits the union of 160,000 actors against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, or AMPTP.
