Death has never been a stranger to House of the Dragon. From Queen Aemma Arryn’s tragic childbirth and King Viserys’ painful decline to the fiery deaths of Lucerys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys, every major loss has driven the Dance of the Dragons deeper into chaos. But while Seasons 1 and 2 built toward an inevitable Targaryen civil war, Season 3 finally unleashes its full cost. The long-awaited Battle of the Gullet arrives in spectacular fashion, bringing dragonfire, naval carnage, and some of the most devastating losses the franchise has seen yet.
With princes falling from the sky, commanders meeting brutal ends, and one dragon dragged beneath the waves, Episode 1 just adds new names to Westeros’ growing death toll.

After spending much of Season 2 questioning Rhaenyra’s leadership, Jace took matters into his own hands during the Battle of the Gullet. In a controversial move, he locked his mother inside Dragonstone to stop her from joining the fight, then mounted Vermax and flew into battle himself. The gamble proved fatal. While attacking the Triarchy fleet, Jace became a target for the Myrish scorpions and crossbowmen stationed aboard the ships.
Baela, however, managed to help him escape once, but a second assault left Vermax entangled and crashing into the sea. Jace resurfaced briefly before being struck by multiple arrows and dragged beneath the waves, dying alongside his dragon in one of the most brutal moments of the season premiere.

The significance of his death extends far beyond the battlefield. As Rhaenyra’s eldest son, Prince of Dragonstone, and officially named heir to the Iron Throne, Jace was widely viewed as the future of Team Black. Throughout the series, he evolved from a young prince burdened by questions surrounding his parentage into one of Rhaenyra’s most trusted allies. He secured critical alliances with House Stark and House Arryn, supported the recruitment of dragonseeds, and increasingly emerged as a capable wartime leader.
His death not only robs Rhaenyra of her heir and strongest political asset but also delivers Team Black one of its most devastating blows since the deaths of Lucerys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys, fundamentally altering the balance of the Dance of the Dragons.
While the Battle of the Gullet claimed princes, dragons, and naval commanders alike, one of its most unexpected casualties was the man who helped bring the Triarchy into the war in the first place.
Ser Tyland Lannister
Tyland Lannister survived courtroom conspiracies, succession wars, and the Greens’ increasingly desperate fight for power, only to meet one of the most unceremonious ends of the Battle of the Gullet. As Admiral Sharako Lohar’s fleet came under heavy attack, the longtime Green loyalist found himself aboard the very ships he had helped bring into the war.
With chaos erupting across the battlefield and Lohar’s vessel struggling under pressure, the Triarchy commander made a ruthless decision and tossed Tyland overboard to lighten the load. In an instant, one of Team Green’s most influential figures disappeared beneath the waves, becoming an unlikely casualty of his own alliance.
Although rarely seen on the battlefield, Tyland was one of the political architects of the Green cause. As master of Coin and a trusted member of King Aegon II’s Small Council, he played a crucial role in managing the crown’s finances and securing the Triarchy partnership that eventually led to the Battle of the Gullet. By ending his story here, House of the Dragon has wiped out one of Team Green’s sharpest strategists far earlier than George R.R. Martin’s original account.
Ser Jason Lannister
Unlike many of the episode’s major casualties, Jason Lannister’s death unfolds entirely off-screen. Yet its impact is no less brutal. As the Battle of the Gullet raged across land and sea, the Lord of Casterly Rock was killed in combat, his fate only revealed when his severed head was delivered to Daemon Targaryen on the battlefield. The grisly reveal instantly confirmed the fall of one of Team Green’s most powerful bannermen, turning what should have been a military campaign into a catastrophic day for House Lannister.
Introduced as the proud, arrogant, and fiercely ambitious head of House Lannister, he spent much of the series championing the Green cause and providing crucial military support to King Aegon II. Alongside his twin brother Tyland, Jason represented one of the wealthiest and most influential families in Westeros. With both brothers now dead, House of the Dragon effectively wipes out the Green faction’s most prominent Lannister leadership in a single episode, underscoring just how costly the Dance of the Dragons is becoming for every great house involved.
While princes and lords dominated the battle’s headlines, few warriors left a bloodier mark on the Gullet than the ruthless Triarchy commander who seemed unstoppable until her final duel.
Admiral Sharako Lohar
After spending much of the Battle of the Gullet terrorizing the Velaryon fleet, Sharako Lohar finally met her end in a brutal showdown with Alyn of Hull. The Triarchy commander had already helped unleash devastation across the battlefield and appeared determined to finish her long-running vendetta against Corlys Velaryon. But as the fighting intensified, Lohar found herself locked in a savage one-on-one clash with Corlys’ illegitimate son. The duel eventually spilled into the sea, where Alyn emerged victorious, bringing down one of the battle’s deadliest players and ending the Triarchy’s most feared commander’s reign of destruction.

Although Lohar’s time on the series was relatively brief, she quickly became one of the most memorable additions to the war. Introduced as the ruthless admiral leading the Triarchy fleet, she played a pivotal role in Team Green’s naval strategy and was largely responsible for breaking Corlys Velaryon’s blockade. House of the Dragon also expanded the character far beyond George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, giving Lohar a personal rivalry with Corlys and a far greater presence in the Battle of the Gullet. By the time she fell, she had already cemented herself as one of the conflict’s most dangerous and unpredictable figures.
As devastating as the Battle of the Gullet was, its true impact may not be felt until the episodes ahead. With Rhaenyra losing her heir, Team Green stripped of key allies, and dragons continuing to vanish from the skies, the balance of the Dance of the Dragons has shifted once again.
