House of the Dragon Season 3 has drawn 21.5 million global viewers across HBO and HBO Max during its first three days of availability, Warner Bros. Discovery has announced. The fantasy drama continues to command a massive audience despite launching during one of the busiest periods on the global sporting calendar.

The latest figures combine Nielsen's measurement of HBO's linear audience with Warner Bros. Discovery's own streaming data from HBO Max. While the opening numbers are slightly below last season's premiere, the series has once again demonstrated the enduring popularity of George R.R. Martin's Westeros universe.

The strong debut also comes as Season 3 continues to generate widespread discussion among fans following its highly acclaimed premiere.

House of the Dragon Season 3 premiere reached 21.5 million viewers

According to Warner Bros. Discovery, the Season 3 premiere attracted 21.5 million global viewers within its first three days across HBO and HBO Max. That represents an 8% decline from the Season 2 premiere, which drew 23.4 million viewers over the same period.  Even so, the latest season has retained the overwhelming majority of its audience, reinforcing House of the Dragon as one of HBO's biggest television franchises.

Warner Bros. Discovery also revealed that weekly viewership for Season 2 tripled leading into the Season 3 premiere, indicating that many viewers revisited earlier episodes, or even discovered the series for the first time, ahead of the new season. The company also noted that Season 1 episodes now average 92.2 million lifetime viewers, highlighting the long-term popularity of George R.R. Martin's fantasy saga.

While the slight year-over-year decline may stand out on paper, the broader context behind those numbers paints a much more encouraging picture for HBO, especially given the intense competition the series faced during its return.

FIFA World Cup competition adds context to House of the Dragon Season 3 ratings

The slight year-over-year decline of House Of The Dragon comes with an important caveat. Unlike Season 2, this year's premiere is competing directly with the FIFA World Cup, one of the most-watched sporting events in the world, making audience retention all the more noteworthy.

The competition is particularly significant this year because the FIFA World Cup is being co-hosted by the United States, where House of the Dragon commands one of its largest audiences. With the tournament dominating television schedules and viewer attention across the country, HBO's fantasy drama still managed to retain the vast majority of its premiere audience despite the unusually crowded viewing landscape.

Despite that challenge, House of the Dragon has maintained a remarkably strong start, with its Season 3 premiere not only drawing a massive global audience but also establishing itself as one of the highest-rated television episodes in recent years. With six episodes still to come before the August 9 finale, the series appears well-positioned to build on its impressive opening-week momentum.
