A new dawn awaits at the doors of the MCU as they plan to draw the curtains on the multiverse saga and start setting up for their Phase 7, which will tell a myriad of stories from the mutant universe. Post-Avengers: Secret Wars, the MCU will be all about mutants, and Marvel Studios has even sifted through some stories to pick those that will establish this new saga better.

While the studio has already picked a few big names to headline this watershed transition for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have been desperately trying to advocate for a place for our ex-Man of Steel, Henry Cavill, who has already traded cape for claws once in a small but memorable appearance in the MCU. His “Cavillrine” in Deadpool & Wolverine intrigued fans so much that they now want the British actor in a bigger MCU role.

But does the MCU have a place for him in its future, or is it all just some wishful thinking on the part of the fans that does not really fit in the larger scheme of things?

Decoding Henry Cavill’s future in the MCU

If we were to believe the word on the street, then Marvel Studios is really listening carefully to the wishes of the fans and is trying its best to get Henry Cavill on board their ship for a multi-project deal. Some of the credible sources, like the scooper MyTimeToShineHello and the X page Craze Crave, have reported talks between the actor and the studio for a major mutant role in the X-Men reboot.

However, these are for now just hearsay, as neither the actor nor the studio has confirmed anything on the matter. But if this were to be true, then fans are heavily speculating about a turn as Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto. He will be an age-appropriate overlord of magnetic fields, considering Marvel is trying to push for a younger cast for the X-Men reboot. His age will actually be in line with Christopher Abbott’s Professor X in the upcoming movie.

While Magneto seems to be a probable option for the big entry Marvel would want to give Cavill, a very obvious pick lies in front of the actor: “The Cavillrine.” Fans would love nothing more than to see him extend his iconic cameo in the MCU into a staple character. Just a few seconds of him with those adamantium claws and that gruff beard in Deadpool & Wolverine made everyone forget about his DC outing as the clean-shaven, god-like Kryptonian.

The only hiccup here is that the MCU already has a Wolverine in Hugh Jackman, and it is really difficult to say if Marvel is ready to let him go yet, as Ryan Reynolds famously joked in the movie that Marvel and Disney would make him do the character till he is 90. So, introducing another Wolverine in the same universe does not make sense, and it is highly questionable whether they will both stay as the prime Wolverine Variants. Therefore, even if the doors for Wolverine are always open for him, it does not seem like the right fit at the moment.

Will Henry Cavill Return as Wolverine in 'Avengers: Doomsday' and 'Secret Wars?'

So, if Magneto does not become a reality for the star for some reason and Wolverine seems out of the question for now, what else could he play in the larger mutant saga?

More roles that have Henry Cavill written all over them

There are several other characters that lie in the vicinity of the X-Men world, most notable of them being Captain Britain and Beyonder. Henry Cavill has actually expressed his interest in playing a British superhero in a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. This makes Captain Britain a dream come true for the former DC superhero. Moreover, in the comics, Captain Britain has a connection to the X-Men.

The man who plays Captain Britain in the comics, Brian Braddock, is actually the twin brother of Betsy Braddock, better known in the stories as Psylocke. Their kinship and Brian's deep ties to mutant mythology are confirmed by Marvel's official character biography. Together with Kitty Pryde, Rachel Summers, and Nightcrawler, three X-Men veterans, he co-founded Excalibur.

Although Brian is not typically depicted as a mutant, this does not rule him out if the more widespread rumor is that Cavill might make an appearance in Marvel's X-Men film. His connections to mutant mythology, Excalibur, Otherworld, and Psylocke provide Marvel with an obvious path to include Cavill in a role that not only coincides with the mutant world but also with the universes beyond that.

Lastly, there is this god-like character that fits Cavill’s stature from his previous outing with similar transcendent powers. Cavill can join the MCU as Beyonder - a cosmic character that possess powers that can bend space and time to his will. Although this celestial character has not been revealed in speculations yet, fans would be thrilled to see Cavill play such a significant role in the future Secret Wars plot.

That is right; if Henry Cavill is cast in the role of Beyonder, we can see him as soon as Avengers: Secret Wars. Beyonder has a significant part to play in the Secret Wars storyline, and if the makers decide to keep that part of the plot in the movie, then there is a big role waiting for Cavill in the MCU. Beyonder has had several entanglements with the X-Men and the New Mutants in the comics, and might be a recurring character in the mutant saga.

As much fun as it would be to see Henry Cavill in these roles, there is no guarantee for now that there is light at the end of the tunnel for these wishful casting dreams. No matter how many characters we fancast him as, it ultimately depends on the on Marvel’s seal of approval. And if this reality does not help, we can always pray to our Marvel Jesus - Mr. Ryan Reynolds. He brought him to the MCU once; he can do it again!
