As artists continue to blur the lines between their personal and creative lives, public curiosity around celebrity relationships has only grown stronger. For many stars, deciding how much of that private world to share can be just as challenging as creating the work itself.
Gracie Abrams has largely taken a measured approach when it comes to her relationship with actor Paul Mescal. Although the couple has gradually become more public over the past two years, the singer has remained selective about what she chooses to reveal.
Now, while discussing her upcoming album 'Daughter From Hell', Abrams has offered a candid glimpse into how her relationship with Mescal has shaped both her personal life and her creative process.

Gracie Abrams explains why she no longer wants to hide her romance with Paul Mescal
During an appearance on The New York Times Popcast, Gracie Abrams reflected on collaborating with Paul Mescal on the song 'Imaginary Friend' and addressed whether making music together invited more public attention into their relationship. Speaking to the podcast, she explained that she has become more comfortable with sharing certain parts of her life while still valuing her privacy.
"I don't like the feeling of hiding," Abrams said. She quickly added that privacy still matters to her, explaining that she prefers to keep personal boundaries where they feel right rather than treating her life as "an open-door policy."
The singer also described her relationship with Mescal as a source of peace and stability despite the public interest surrounding it on the New York Times Popcast. Rather than focusing on outside opinions, Abrams said she chooses to hold on to the happiness and perspective that come from experiences she knows are meaningful.
Even so, Abrams made it clear that keeping parts of her relationship private does not mean separating it entirely from her art. In fact, she revealed that one of the most personal moments on her new album came together in the most natural way alongside Mescal.
Gracie Abrams says creating music with Paul Mescal felt completely natural
Gracie Abrams also revealed on the New York Times Popcast that writing 'Imaginary Friend' together was not a carefully planned milestone for the couple. Instead, she described it as a natural extension of the creative environment they already share at home with friends.
“That was so fun to write together. That wasn't some groundbreaking event for us,” she explained. “We have a very creative home with friends who are so good at what they do and everyone feels happy to share that with one another.” Abrams explained.

She added that the song came together simply while the two were spending time together at home, making the collaboration feel effortless rather than significant. For Abrams, that relaxed creative process reflects the kind of relationship they have built—one grounded in shared creativity instead of public expectations, a perspective that has also shaped her recent reflections on the Eras Tour.
