Directed by Jeff Wamester and written by Jeremy Adams, the R-rated feature premiered at the Annecy International Animation Festival, with its first trailer arriving on June 23, 2026, ahead of a wider release later this year.

Ever since the footage dropped, excitement has been building among fans, and the film’s roster of heroes and villains has become one of its biggest talking points, with several long-awaited favorites set to make their highly anticipated debut on screen.

1. Batman

Voiced by Anson Mount (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds), Batman remains the emotional core of Batman: Knightfall Part 1. Drawing heavily from the comics, Bruce Wayne's journey in the film is defined by exhaustion, isolation, and an unwavering sense of responsibility that slowly begins to consume him. Despite his brilliance and determination, the Dark Knight finds himself grappling with the limits of his own body and mind while refusing to let others share the burden he has carried for years.

His stubborn independence and relentless drive transform him into a tragic figure, forcing him to confront questions about mortality, legacy, and what it truly means to be Gotham’s protector.

Bruce Wayne’s journey is further shaped by heartfelt moments with his protégé Robin, whose presence serves as a rare source of hope amid his growing isolation, making their bond one of the film’s most important emotional threads.

2. Tim Drake/Robin

As the third hero to wear the Robin mantle, Tim Drake brings heart and humanity to Batman: Knightfall Part 1. Brought to life by Jack Griffin, Robin also continues a legacy that has made the Dynamic Duo one of DC’s most beloved partnerships for decades. Although Tim has appeared in numerous animated and live-action projects, the film places special emphasis on his role as Bruce Wayne’s trusted protégé and closest ally.

In the Knightfall comics, Tim serves as a compassionate counterbalance to Batman’s relentless drive. He often acts as the voice of reason and provides emotional support when Bruce becomes increasingly isolated, and that is brought to the film trilogy as well.

Their mentor-student relationship, built on trust and genuine affection, forms one of the film’s most important emotional pillars. At the same time, Tim’s sharp instincts and maturity make him an invaluable partner, allowing him to recognize dangers others overlook. The trailer even hints at his role in bringing Jean-Paul Valley into Bruce's orbit, placing Tim in the unique position of witnessing the rise of Azrael firsthand.

3. Jean-Paul Valley/Azrael

One of the most intriguing aspects of Batman: Knightfall Part 1 is its emphasis on the rise of Jean-Paul Valley, whose transformation into Azrael forms a major chapter of the trilogy. In the source material, Jean-Paul's journey from troubled ally to Batman's controversial successor gave rise to the iconic armored Dark Knight that defined much of the 1990s era. The film similarly places heavy emphasis on his evolution. For longtime fans, perhaps the biggest attraction is finally seeing Jean-Paul Valley's infamous "Az-Bats" era brought to life.

Positioned as Bruce Wayne's unconventional contingency plan, Jean-Paul occupies a pivotal role within the story and stands poised to shape the events of the trilogy, positioning him as a dangerous yet essential figure whose presence carries enormous consequences. Bringing the character to life is Pablo Schreiber (Halo, Orange Is the New Black). He is positioned alongside Bruce Wayne and Robin as an unlikely ally in the battle against the ultimate mastermind, Bane, behind the Knightfall trilogy, setting the stage for a journey that would forever alter Gotham's future.

4. Bane

Every great hero needs an equally formidable adversary, and in the Knightfall saga, that role belongs to Bane. More than just a physically imposing villain, Bane is the mastermind who orchestrates the Arkham Asylum breakout, setting into motion a chain of events designed to push Bruce Wayne beyond his limits, which results in "Knightfall." Rather than confronting Batman head-on, he studies his opponent, exploits his weaknesses, and patiently allows Gotham's chaos to wear him down.

For much of the story, Batman is not fighting Bane directly so much as battling the shadow of a strategist pulling the strings from afar. Their eventual encounter is less a traditional showdown than the culmination of a meticulously crafted plan. Taking on the role is Michael Mando (Better Call Saul), whose portrayal captures the brilliance and brutality that turned Bane into the architect of Batman's greatest downfall, making the villain one of the most defining antagonists in Batman history.

5. Mr. Freeze

Mr. Freeze is one of the Arkham Asylum inmates unleashed during the events of Batman: Knightfall Part 1. He exploited the ongoing chaos for his own ends. In the original Knightfall comics, Victor Fries resumes his criminal pursuits after being released from the asylum by taking a group of Gotham elites hostage and transforming their gala into a frozen fortress. The resulting crisis serves a larger purpose within the story, as battling Mr. Freeze demands far more than brute strength.

Forced to navigate an icy stronghold using specialized equipment and careful planning, Batman is pushed through yet another physically exhausting ordeal, further draining his already dwindling reserves. The recently released trailer also highlights Freeze as one of the film's visual standouts, teasing a striking showdown inside a frozen environment and emphasizing his role in Gotham's relentless war of attrition.

6. Scarecrow

Scarecrow is not just one of the many inmates housed within Arkham Asylum; he is among the most dangerous and psychologically powerful villains unleashed during the Knightfall saga in comics. Following the breakout, Dr. Jonathan Crane joins forces with the Joker in a horrifying campaign that targets Gotham's leadership, kidnapping city officials and using his fear toxin to spread chaos throughout the city. Yet his most devastating experiment is reserved for Batman himself.

Their confrontation becomes one of the most agonizing battles Bruce Wayne endures, as an exhausted and sleep-deprived Dark Knight finds his already weakened mental defenses shattered by Scarecrow's toxin. Forced to relive his deepest traumas and consumed by grief, Batman is pushed to a frightening emotional breaking point. Although he manages to overcome the villain, the encounter leaves him mentally scarred and physically depleted, making Scarecrow a crucial architect of Gotham's descent into chaos.

7. The Joker

The trauma Scarecrow forces Batman to relive in Knightfall stems from none other than the Joker himself, making the Clown Prince of Crime one of the most emotionally devastating adversaries in Bruce Wayne's life. Freed from Arkham Asylum during Bane's orchestrated breakout, Joker joins forces with Scarecrow in a twisted campaign that includes kidnapping Gotham's mayor and terrorizing the city from the shadows.

Yet, despite their alliance, the Joker alone remains the embodiment of Batman's deepest scars. In the comics, Scarecrow's fear toxin forces Bruce into a terrifying, grief-fueled rage. So, after overwhelming Scarecrow, Batman turns his fury on the Joker with a level of violence rarely seen, leaving the usually fearless villain genuinely horrified. The encounter highlights why Joker remains Batman's most personal enemy and one of the emotional pillars of the Knightfall saga.

8. Tally Man

Unlike many of Gotham's rogues, the Tally Man is not an Arkham Asylum inmate but a deeply unstable hitman, and the trailer places him right in the middle of the citywide rampage engulfing Gotham. Operating independently rather than under Bane's command, the troubled killer uses the collapse of law and order to pursue his own warped sense of justice. He targeted the wealthy and powerful while keeping a grim count of his victims. His tragic origins and obsession with collecting "debts" make him one of the saga's more unsettling antagonists.

While Bruce Wayne initially crosses paths with the lethal marksman, the Tally Man's importance extends far beyond a single encounter. In the Knightfall comics, his story becomes intertwined with Jean-Paul Valley's rise, as the transformed Azrael ultimately takes him down. With the trailer heavily teasing Azrael's armored evolution, that connection could make the Tally Man a surprisingly crucial piece of the film, serving as one of the key adversaries through which audiences witness Jean-Paul's transformation unfold. Notably, the character is also making what amounts to his first major spotlight in modern DC animation.

9. The Riddler

A vital piece of the Knightfall puzzle, pun fully intended, the Riddler emerges as one of the most intellectually dangerous inmates unleashed from Arkham Asylum. Voiced by David Dastmalchian, the master strategist grows frustrated by Gotham's chaos and devises a citywide game involving puzzle-locked explosives, forcing Batman to devote every ounce of his attention to deciphering riddles and preventing catastrophe. In many ways, the challenge is exactly what Edward Nygma craves: Batman's undivided focus.

Ironically, their eventual confrontation is almost anticlimactic. Once the riddles are solved, Batman corners the physically unimposing villain with ease and forces him to reveal the kill switch, leading to a swift arrest. Yet the true victory belongs to the Riddler. The endless mental gymnastics leave Bruce Wayne cognitively exhausted, proving that in Knightfall, some of Batman's most devastating battles are fought not with fists, but with his mind.

10. Two-Face

The Knightfall saga truly earns its name, and Two-Face becomes a crucial part of Batman's slow descent. While Harvey Dent may seem less physically imposing than some of Gotham's other escaped Arkham inmates, his twisted obsession with justice makes him just as dangerous, with fans continuing to envision Sebastian Stan as a future Harvey Dent in The Batman Part II. Retreating to an abandoned courthouse with hostages and armed henchmen, Two-Face turns the legal system itself into a deadly game governed by the flip of a coin.

By the time Batman reaches him, the Dark Knight has already endured countless battles, forcing him to rely on stealth and tactics as his exhausted body absorbs punishment he would normally avoid. Rather than ending in a brutal brawl, the confrontation becomes a psychological chess match. The ordeal consumes precious hours and immense mental energy, perfectly serving Bane's greater design by bleeding Batman dry long before the mastermind himself steps out of the shadows.

11. Nightwing

Saving the best for last, and perhaps rightfully so, Nightwing occupies one of the most emotionally complex roles in the Knightfall saga. In the original comics, Dick Grayson is the "snubbed son," absent for much of the crisis and unaware of Bruce Wayne's deteriorating condition. When Batman finally falls, Bruce's shocking decision to pass over his oldest protégé in favor of Jean-Paul Valley creates a wound that lingers until KnightsEnd, where Nightwing returns to help clean up the chaos left behind by Azrael.

The film, however, brings Dick Grayson into the action much earlier, with the trailer showcasing him fighting alongside Batman and Robin as Gotham collapses. Yet the tragedy remains unchanged. Despite having both of his sons by his side, Bruce's relentless self-isolation ultimately leaves him vulnerable. Nightwing's presence in Part 1 beautifully lays the emotional groundwork for the painful betrayal and reconciliation still to come.

From physical battles and psychological warfare to emotional scars and fractured alliances, the Knightfall saga throws every kind of challenge imaginable at Batman and his allies. That is precisely why Bane's masterpiece remains so revered and why this long-awaited animated adaptation feels so exciting. After all these years, Knightfall is finally getting its due, with these 11 characters coming to play.
