Jessica Hynes is taking an unexpected, dramatic detour in Patience Season 2, with a newly released preview teasing a far sharper side to the beloved comedy veteran. The actress makes her debut as Detective Frankie Monroe in the upcoming season of the beloved PBS crime drama. British detective dramas have quietly become one of television’s most dependable genres, consistently blending mystery with emotionally layered storytelling. Among them, Patience managed to carve out a loyal audience with its grounded perspective, eventually becoming one of PBS’ most-streamed titles of 2025.
Now, as the series gears up for its U.S. return after airing earlier this year in the U.K., a newly released sneak peek may have already teased Season 2’s biggest shake-up.

Jessica Hynes’ debut as Detective Frankie Monroe wastes little time announcing itself, and it is far removed from the comedic energy audiences have long associated with the actress. In an exclusive first-look clip shared by Just Jared, Hynes enters Patience with a noticeably sterner edge, bringing an almost intimidating energy to the department from the moment she arrives.
The sneak peek introduces Monroe during the team’s discussion of a bizarre murder involving a photographer found dead with a stake through his heart. But rather than settling comfortably into the room, Hynes’ character immediately creates friction. The friction becomes immediately apparent when Patience attempts to weigh in during the investigation, only for Monroe to respond with visible skepticism, setting a noticeably uneasy tone between the two.
What makes the moment land even harder is how restrained Hynes plays it. There are no oversized confrontations or dramatic outbursts — only clipped reactions, skepticism, and a visible unwillingness to indulge Patience at first. For an actress whose career has often thrived in comedy, the shift feels surprisingly sharp and refreshingly uncomfortable.
Yet, if the sneak peek proves anything, it is that Frankie Monroe is not arriving to quietly blend in. She is here to challenge the rhythm of Patience and perhaps Patience Evans herself.
Jessica Hynes’s dramatic turn may become Patience Season 2’s biggest surprise
While Frankie Monroe initially enters the story as a disruptive force, Season 2 seems poised to explore something far more layered beneath the tension. Speaking to TV Insider, Ella Maisy Purvis praised Jessica Hynes’ performance and hinted that Monroe’s harsher edges are only part of the story.
“It’s such a different character, and she plays it so well,” Purvis said to TV Insider, adding that Hynes strikes a careful balance because Monroe is not meant to feel like a straightforward villain.

That contrast may ultimately become one of Season 2’s most compelling strengths. Casting a beloved comedy veteran in a role built on emotional friction already gives Patience an unexpected spark, but allowing the character room to evolve could make Frankie Monroe much more than a difficult new boss. With the new season promising darker cases, emotional turns, and a fresh working dynamic, Jessica Hynes’ unexpected shift into intense drama may end up being the biggest reason to tune in.
