Ewan McGregor is ready to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi whenever Disney is ready to bring him back. The actor has never hidden his affection for the legendary Jedi, and his latest comments have once again put the beloved Star Wars character in the spotlight.

Now, with McGregor still clearly enthusiastic about the character, the possibility of another chapter raises an intriguing question about just how much of Obi-Wan's story remains to be told.

Ewan McGregor made his latest comments during an interview with E! News while promoting his much-anticipated upcoming film, The End of Oak Street, reflecting on the story of Obi-Wan after the events of the Disney+ series. The actor explained that he believes there is still an entire period of the Jedi's life that could be explored before the character eventually becomes the older Obi-Wan played by Alec Guinness, and how he wants to keep playing this character for the rest of his life.

“I am ready whenever they are... They just seem to not be ready, but I am up for it... I have 10 years before I am Alec Guinness' age. So come on, Disney,” McGregor told E! News. He then pointed to the ending of Obi-Wan Kenobi, when the Jedi leaves Luke with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, as the beginning of a period he would like to explore further. He added that he would be open to telling those stories through either series or movies.

McGregor also pointed to the gap between the end of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alec Guinness' appearance as the older Obi-Wan in A New Hope as the period he wants to explore, telling E! News that he wants to “spend the rest of my career doing these stories.” His comments turn that unexplored stretch of Obi-Wan's life into something considerably more interesting than simply another potential return. The actor is not asking for one specific format or even one particular story, but is openly expressing a desire to keep exploring the character while there is still time to do it.

And that enthusiasm is not exactly new, as McGregor has been attached to Obi-Wan for more than two decades.

Ewan McGregor first played Obi-Wan in 1999's Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, before reprising the role in Attack of the Clones in 2002 and Revenge of the Sith in 2005. While the prequel trilogy divided audiences, McGregor's performance as the younger version of the Jedi became one of its most consistently praised elements, helping establish him as a fan favorite within the franchise.

After a 17-year hiatus, McGregor returned to the role for Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2022. The Disney+ series was always intended as a limited series, but McGregor had already expressed his desire to continue playing the character before its finale aired, telling British GQ that he would be happy to make more Obi-Wan stories “every now and again.”

The series also demonstrated the continued audience interest in McGregor's version of the Jedi, becoming Disney+'s second-most-watched show of 2022 with 6.5 billion minutes viewed in the United States, according to Luminate. For now, there is no confirmed new Obi-Wan project, but McGregor has made his position unmistakably clear: if Disney wants to tell another story, he is ready.
