“He’s like a cowboy, and he’s gritty and world-weary, but he’s strong...And he has this sensitive side, but we don’t know it right away.” Speaking to Variety, Finn recalled how she pitched Pascal to Favreau by focusing on the layered personality she believed the actor could bring to Din Djarin.

The western influence behind the series also reportedly played a major role in shaping Pascal’s performance. According to USA Today, Favreau encouraged the actor to watch classic Clint Eastwood westerns, particularly Sergio Leone’s Man with No Name trilogy, alongside films by legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, whose samurai storytelling heavily inspired the tone of The Mandalorian.

Her résumé also includes major titles across Star Wars, making her one of the industry’s most influential casting directors.

Pascal recalled the moment, while speaking to Vanity Fair, when he finally asked Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni what character they actually wanted him to play, and their answer totally caught him completely off guard, and his immediate reaction ended up being, “H*** s***. Really?” before quickly saying yes to the opportunity.
