Bob Odenkirk has spent the last few years slowly opening up about the terrifying medical emergency that abruptly changed his life while filming Better Call Saul in 2021. Though fans have long known the actor suffered a major health scare during production of the show’s final season, Odenkirk has rarely spoken about it in vivid detail in public and what actually unfolded behind the scenes.

The Emmy nominee has since reflected on how the experience changed his perspective on life, health and even his own sense of purpose. Following months of recovery, Odenkirk returned to acting while making several lifestyle changes.

But during a recent interview, the actor offered some of the most unsettling details yet about what happened that day on set — revealing just how frightening the situation truly became.

What Bob Odenkirk revealed about his near-fatal 2021 heart attack?

Bob Odenkirk has revealed shocking new details about the near-fatal heart attack he suffered while filming Better Call Saul in 2021, admitting that confusion on set delayed help after he collapsed and that he briefly “turned gray” during the medical emergency. Speaking to The Times of London, the actor explained how co-stars Rhea Seehorn and Patrick Fabian rushed to help while others nearby mistakenly thought they were laughing.

“I went down and Rhea [Seehorn] and Patrick [Fabian] grabbed me, and they were screaming, but [the crew members who noticed] thought they were laughing...So there were delays in reacting because we were all so far apart from each other.” Odenkirk recalled while speaking to The Times of London, and went on to explain that COVID-era distancing on set contributed to the confusion as he collapsed.

Odenkirk also revealed that the situation became even more alarming once medical help arrived on set, explaining that the on-set medic reportedly had little experience handling an emergency of that scale and had never even previously performed CPR, adding to the chaos surrounding the incident. After being transported to a hospital, doctors treated Odenkirk without surgery and later discovered a completely blocked “widow-maker artery” — a condition that often turns fatal.

Odenkirk revealed that he remembers very little from the actual medical emergency itself, explaining that unlike many near-death experiences people describe, he did not experience vivid memories or emotional visions. In fact, the actor admitted that his first clear memory after the incident was leaving the hospital roughly a week later, underscoring just how disorienting the ordeal had been for him.

While the medical emergency itself was terrifying, Odenkirk says the experience ultimately changed something much deeper: the way he viewed his own life and presence in the world.

Why Bob Odenkirk now sees the terrifying ordeal differently?

Looking back now, Bob Odenkirk says the experience changed far more than just his physical health. Since the incident, the actor has spoken about how surviving the scare unexpectedly gave him a renewed appreciation for everyday life, while also prompting him to make long-term health adjustments.

“That was such a gift, to experience a few weeks where I felt that way about my presence in the world...I felt just very, very delighted and engaged.” Odenkirk said while reflecting on the recovery period during his interview with The Times of London. Rather than feeling overwhelmed by fear afterwards, the actor described the experience as unexpectedly clarifying.

Recovering mentally from the heart attack took far longer than the physical healing itself. Odenkirk previously explained that he experienced an unusually upbeat period immediately afterwards but struggled to fully process what had happened, admitting it took time for his brain to return to a normal state and that the experience remains something he thinks about every day.
