When Ted Lasso returns early next month for it's fourth season, it will mark a fresh chapter for one of Apple TV+'s most celebrated series. What did Apple TV's Matt Cherniss reveal about Ted Lasso Season 5?
Speaking to Deadline while celebrating Apple TV+'s record 87 Emmy nominations, Head of Programming Matt Cherniss suggested that Jason Sudeikis is already thinking beyond Ted Lasso Season 4. Although Apple TV+ has not officially renewed Ted Lasso for a fifth season, Cherniss indicated that the creative team is optimistic about continuing the story.
"Jason [Sudeikis is] still hard at work on season four, and I know he's looking to jump into the next season soon, but to my knowledge, I don't think we've gotten started on it yet," Cherniss said.
The comments stop short of confirming a Season 5 renewal, but they do suggest that future plans are already being considered behind the scenes as Cherniss mentions in the interview with Deadline. With Sudeikis serving as the series' co-creator, showrunner, head writer and executive producer other than playing the titular character, his long-term vision remains central to wherever the story goes next.
As officially announced, Season 4 will see Ted return to Richmond to coach a second-division women's football team, effectively serving as a new beginning for the series while retaining several beloved characters from the original run.
Why could Ted Lasso continue beyond Season 4?
Matt Cherniss' remarks also reflect Apple's continued confidence in one of its most successful franchises, that is, Ted Lasso. Across its first three seasons, Ted Lasso earned an impressive 61 Emmy nominations and became the defining comedy series for Apple TV+, helping establish the streamer as a major player in original television.
"It's great, I feel like we have the best comedy brand in the business, and to be able to go from a season with Shrinking and Widow’s Bay and Margot's Got Money Troubles to next year with Ted Lasso and The Studio coming back. We're in a really good place as a service." Cherniss said while discussing Apple TV+'s comedy slate, adding that the service is excited to welcome both Ted Lasso and The Studio back for next year's awards season.

While Season 5 remains unofficial, the latest comments indicate that Apple views Ted Lasso as a long-term franchise rather than a story nearing its end. If Season 4's new direction resonates with audiences, the series could have plenty of room to continue exploring Ted's next chapter.
