Disney has assembled the X-Men, announced their May 5, 2028 arrival, and somehow left Magneto wandering outside the mansion. The D23 reveal brought Sadie Sink, Kit Connor, Christopher Abbott, Samara Weaving, Inde Navarrette, Maya Boyd, and Adam Driver into the mutant fold, while Matt Smith has emerged as the deliciously suspicious name circling the vacant Master of Magnetism.

Naturally, the Targaryen-blooded actor is now Hollywood’s latest Magneto whisper, proving dragons and magnetic powers apparently share an agent.

The rumor mill, or specifically Main Middle Man on X, has claimed that Matt Smith has been in talks to play Magneto. This piece of information comes after he was rumored to be in the race for Mister Sinister, a role that we now know to be Adam Driver's thanks to D23. Although, other than negotiations, it seems that things have not progressed for Matt Smith as per the insiders.

It would be quite interesting to see the rumors come true, especially considering that this is not the first time Smith's name has found itself in the rat race of a Marvel casting. He had been in active negotiations to play Reed Richards in Fantastic Four, a role that later found itself in the hands of Pedro Pascal. Other than that, one would have to wait and see if this would be his next Marvel role after Morbius as well.

Even if Main Middle Man says he could play the character, to attract Magneto's role to himself, Matt Smith will also have to defeat the frontrunners for the role right now: Lee Pace, Jensen Ackles, Bill Skarsgård, and Henry Cavill, who all seem to have received quite the favorable response from the internet. Looks like once one starts playing the Game of Thrones, they never truly stop.

While one can not expect Soldier Boy and Superman to be scared off just because of Targaryean blood, Matt Smith's qualifications as Magneto could do the trick, and no, it is not Fox riding a tricycle.

Why Matt Smith would be a well-qualified Magneto

Matt Smith has a knack for making silence feel like a threat. As Daemon Targaryen, Smith can turn a measured glance into a warning and a quiet room into a battlefield, giving him the kind of restrained menace Magneto requires. Erik Lehnsherr needs authority without theatrics, and Smith has that particular trick thoroughly mastered.

Smith also understands characters whose morality refuses to sit comfortably in either hero or villain territory. His performances often give ruthless decisions an emotional logic, allowing audiences to understand the person behind the damage. That quality matters enormously for Magneto, whose extremism grows from trauma, survival, and a fierce conviction that mutantkind cannot afford human optimism. For that reason, Matt Smith would be a remarkably natural fit for Magneto.
