The star of the upcoming blockbusters The Odyssey, Tom Holland, recently shared his deep-seated fears regarding live television broadcasts. Appearing on the popular podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler, the actor confessed that he is absolutely terrified by the prospect of hosting Saturday Night Live. During their heartfelt conversation, he explained that his struggles with dyslexia heavily influence his reluctance to participate in the live show.
"I am heavily dyslexic, which is one of the reasons why I have never done SNL," Holland revealed during the broadcast. The actor elaborated that while he reads well in private, reading out loud triggers an immediate mental block that causes him to freeze. Because of this, formal table read-throughs remain his most stressful days on any movie set.
“It’s just that for me, I can read fine. But when I have to read out loud, it just becomes like a kind of, it’s like a mental block, and I can freeze. So for me, my worst day at work is the read-through”, Holland added. To cope, he carefully memorizes all of his lines well ahead of schedule so that he can simply skim the pages. This intense anxiety has driven him to decline multiple lucrative offers to host the long-running NBC sketch comedy series over the years.
Live reading presents major obstacles, but his perfectly delivered scripted lines have achieved legendary pop-culture status.
