An Academy Award is one of the most prestigious honors in the film industry. Legends like Katharine Hepburn, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Cillian Murphy, Will Smith, and many other notable names in the industry have received the honor for their brilliant performances. And this year, another talented artist will walk away with the coveted trophy.

Now, winning an Oscar brings immense fame and opens the door to exciting new opportunities. But does it also come with financial rewards?

Unfortunately, the Academy does not offer a cash prize for winning an Oscar. So when Adrien Brody won for The Brutalist, he was presented with the gold-plated statuette, but not a monetary reward. However, winners, including Brody, receive a luxury gift bag, which is known for featuring some of the most lavish products and experiences, and the same can be said for this year.

The same tradition continued last year, with winners receiving a swag bag filled with around 60 gifts and offerings. Some highlights of the collection curated by Distinctive Assets included a $400 collection of film-inspired merchandise from Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, $1,570 luxury pocket squares from members-only fashion house Daniel Ashley Co., and $305 worth of skincare products from Swiss brand INSTYTUTUM, among many others. There were also high-end offerings, such as a $5,200 stay at Barcelona’s five-star Cotton House Hotel.

As for this year, the details of the bag are yet to be shared with the public. Nominees, too, receive swag bags in recognition of their achievements.

While these gift bags are worth six figures, the Oscar statuette itself actually costs far less to produce than many might expect.

How much does it cost to craft an Oscar Award?

Shockingly, the cost to make the statuette is far less than the value it holds once it is completed and bestowed upon winners by the Academy. The 24-karat gold-plated statuette is reported to be valued at just $1. Moreover, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has a strict rule since 1951 that prevents winners, their heirs, or anyone else in possession of the award from reselling it.

The only party it can be resold to is the Academy itself, and that too for just $1. While there have been instances where the Academy was unable to prevent resales, it has often taken legal action against those who attempt to sell their Oscars. So, while the statuette might be worth $1 and the swag bag is worth way more than that. And yet, the true value of Oscar is still priceless and unmatched.
