“I Will Never Forget” - Geoff Keighley Slams Academy for Overlooking Father David Keighley’s IMAX Legacy

The 2026 Oscars rolled out drama, not just on the red carpet but behind it, where unseen hands shape the spectacle. From blockbuster exclusions to tech geniuses left in the shadows, the ceremony reminded audiences that Hollywood loves a face on a poster more than a brain behind a lens. Geoff Keighley and his father, David Keighley, became the latest focal point in this quiet battle.
While fans swoon over glitzy premieres, the true architects of cinematic wonder, visionaries, technicians, and projection pioneers often vanish from the applause and the spotlight.

Geoff Keighley did not hold back, publicly calling out the Academy for leaving his father, David Keighley, who passed away in August 2025, out of the televised In Memoriam segment.
“So incredibly disappointed and heartbroken that the Oscars and AMPAS chose not to include my father, David Keighley, and his immeasurable contributions to IMAX and cinema in the broadcast,” he wrote on X.
He added, “I will never forget,” letting the frustration and deep love shine through.
David Keighley literally rewrote how modern audiences experience cinema, collaborating with directors Christopher Nolan and James Cameron to elevate 70mm IMAX projections into fully immersive art experiences.
Even though a new category honoring the craft of casting was introduced this season to honor behind-the-scenes work, Geoff Keighley’s response highlighted the omission of other technical contributors, emphasizing the vital role these professionals play in shaping the cinematic experiences audiences enjoy.
While Geoff Keighley fought for behind-the-scenes innovators like his father, the rest of the Oscars spotlight shone on stars and franchises, leaving equally deserving talent unnoticed in the ceremony’s glare.
Major snubs mark the 2026 Oscars ceremony
The pattern of notable omissions continued throughout the 2026 Oscars. Ariana Grande was not nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Wicked: For Good, Dwayne Johnson did not receive a Best Actor nomination, and James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash was not included in the Best Picture category. These selections reflect the Academy’s choices across major awards this year.

All these snubs reignited long-standing conversations about Hollywood’s recognition. David Keighley was not a director or producer in the traditional sense, but as Chief Quality Officer at IMAX, he oversaw post-production and technical refinement on more than 500 films. His extensive work with directors advancing cinematic innovation made his omission especially significant for his son, Geoff Keighley.
