As it stands, there is no official information on the exact amount a host gets for hosting the Oscars. But an estimate suggests that Conan O’Brien might be getting somewhere around $15,000 to host this year’s Oscars based on statements made by some previous hosts.
The statement comes from Jimmy Kimmel, who has hosted the Oscars in 2017, 2018, 2023, and 2024. He revealed this on his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, in March 2022, while talking to Wanda Sykes, who hosted the 2022 Oscars alongside Amy Schumer and Regina Hall. He disclosed the exact remuneration he was paid for hosting the Oscars at the time.
"I got paid $15,000 to host the Oscars," he said on the show. He further said that this amount might sound a lot for just one night, but it is not just one night’s work. The effort and time it takes to prepare for hosting the Oscars takes months of commitment. According to him, the number does not seem fair enough, taking into consideration the months of hardwood gone into the process.
This might not be the exact number that O’Brien would be receiving for hosting this year, because the salaries are negotiable, with the upper bracket being as high as $25,000 (according to The Hollywood Reporter). Still, this does not make up for the fact that this amount is barely enough for the kind of strength, endurance, and skills the job requires.
But why is the compensation for hosting the biggest night of Hollywood, now with a special treat for Sinners fans, so low?
The reason behind the modest salary for the Oscar hosts
The role of Oscar hosts is not really about the money for most people. Rather, it is to do with the prestige associated with the job. Taking a careful look at the job profile, hosting the Oscars can boost careers, establish or even forward one’s legacy status, and create a ton of headlines because millions of people watch the event worldwide, setting the tone for what they will be talking about for months to come.

So, it is more than just about the money; it is about all the attached benefits that come with it. While most keep fixating on the meager compensation for hosting the star-studded night, some believe that it is merely a price paid for the opportunity to be under the best possible spotlight.
