Sean Penn did not show up at the Oscars 2026. He earned his nomination for portraying Col. Steven J. Lockjaw in One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The film, which also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio del Toro, and Teyana Taylor, has been widely praised by critics and marked one of the year’s most talked-about performances with thirteen nominations at the 98th Oscars.

However, Sean Penn absence from the Oscars did not come entirely as a surprise, given that he skipped most major awards; even the BAFTA 2026 where he even ended up winning. 

Throughout his career, Sean Penn has often shown little enthusiasm for award shows. He has criticized the spectacle surrounding such ceremonies and once even joked about melting down his Oscars to make ammunition. Despite his skepticism toward Hollywood’s awards culture, Penn has still achieved major success, winning Best Actor at the Academy Awards for Mystic River (2003) and Milk (2008).
