Why Are Celebrities Wearing Pins at Oscars 2026? Explained

These are the Artists4Ceasefire pins, which are worn by several actors, filmmakers, and other artists calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as the group describes. Shepard Fairey has designed a new Artists4Ceasefire pin for the 2026 Oscars ceremony. And the pin shows a dove carrying a lotus flower with a barbed wire stem, and this image is said to embody “hope, resilience, and a just peace" as per the group.
At the 2024 Academy Awards, Billie Eilish, Ava DuVernay, and Mark Ruffalo were seen wearing the Artists4Ceasefire badge. This year, the cast of The Voice of Hind Rajab, nominated for Best International Feature, joined it too. Clara Khoury, Amer Hlehel, and Saja Kilani, who were wearing the pin, spoke about it at the Oscars.
“We're demanding a permanent ceasefire because there is no ceasefire right now. There are bombings happening to this day, destruction, displacement, all over the world. You know, in Palestine, Lebanon, Iran, and Venezuela, and everywhere, and this is Yes. So, this is a demand for our permanent ceasefire,” Saja Kilani said at the Oscars 2026 red carpet.
After Kilani spoke, Amer Hlehel also expressed how special it was to be present at the event. Meanwhile, he also addressed a notable absence from the cast; Motaz Malhees, who is also part of the cast, was absent from the ceremony.
Both the actors have opened up about the reason behind the absence.
Amer Hlehel voiced Motaz Malhees’ absence
Actor Motaz Malhees, part of The Voice of Hind Rajab, directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, was unable to join the cast at the Oscar 2026 event. He explained that a travel ban reportedly imposed on Palestinians prevented him from attending this weekend’s Academy Awards. His co-star Amer Hlehel also spoke about Malhees’ absence during the ceremony.
“He was banned from entering the USA and to attend the Oscars, and that's kind something that our celebration it can't happen today fully because we miss him,” he told the reporter.
"But I will not be there. I am not allowed to enter the United States because of my Palestinian citizenship," Malhees wrote on his IG story.
