3 Times The Oscar Awards Had To Issue Public Apologies For Generational Misfires

Published 03/03/2026, 11:20 PM EST

Beneath the glittering chandeliers and the glare of the red carpet, the Oscars have always stood as the pinnacle of cinematic celebration. Yet even this global stage seems prone to missteps, with chas occasionally casting shadows over the glamor. These blunders have led the Oscar awards to issue public apologies, not once, but three times, underlining the Academy’s ongoing reckoning with its past oversights.

And now, the award franchise has once again made headlines, issuing a public apology to Palestinian director Hamdan Ballal, co-creator of the acclaimed documentary No Other Land, for yet another generational misfire. Here are the three most chaotic misfires that forced the Oscars to pause and apologize.

The 1973 Oscars were supposed to glitter with glamor, but the night exploded into one of Hollywood’s juiciest scandals. Marlon Brando snubbed his Best Actor win for The Godfather, sending Sacheen Littlefeather on stage to deliver his protest against Hollywood’s treatment of Native Americans. Instead of applause, she faced boos and jeers, and it was not until 2022 that the Academy finally issued a public apology for the way she was treated. Adding to it, Littlefeather shared how she never thought she would actually live to see the day.

Meanwhile, The Godfather continued to reign as a cinematic masterpiece, sweeping Oscars and enthralling audiences worldwide. Francis Ford Coppola’s epic tale of power, loyalty, and crime earned over 90% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, became a box office juggernaut, and secured its place as a cultural touchstone, proving that while the ceremony stumbled, the film itself remained untouchable in Hollywood history.

Yet, if the Academy thought one apology could close the curtain, 2017 had other plans. A live Best Picture envelope blunder would soon shock viewers worldwide, turning another glittering night into unforgettable chaos.

Moonlight mishap: Oscars got Best Picture wrong live on stage in 2017

The 89th Oscars went from glittering glamor to chaos in an instant, a misfire so massive that no one saw it coming. Millions watched in disbelief as presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway proudly announced La La Land as Best Picture only to realise seconds later that the real winner was Moonlight. That very night, accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers issued a formal apology, explaining that the wrong envelope had been handed to the presenters and expressing sincere regret for the confusion.

“We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture,” PWC on the 2017 Award night.

The media could not stop praising how La La Land and Moonlight’s cast and crew handled the twist of fate with grace and dignity. The film went on to earn universal acclaim, boasting an approx. 98% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and a near‑perfect 99 Metacritic rating, celebrating its powerful storytelling and emotional depth.

But just when Hollywood thought the drama of live gaffes was behind them, the Academy found itself back in the headlines in 2025 over a public apology to Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal.

Oscars making headlines again with public apology to Palestinian filmmaker

The Oscars found themselves in fresh controversy in 2025 when Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal, co‑director of the Oscar‑winning documentary No Other Land, was beaten and detained in the West Bank. The Academy’s first response condemned violence in general but did not mention Ballal or his film by name, prompting widespread outrage from fans and industry figures alike.

Under mounting pressure, the Academy’s Board of Governors issued a formal apology on 29 March 2025, sharing their regret as they failed to directly acknowledge Mr. Ballal and the film by name.

Hollywood erupted as over 500 Academy members, including Mark Ruffalo, Penélope Cruz, Ava DuVernay, and Alfonso Cuarón, slammed the Oscars for failing to publicly support Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal. Despite the chaos, No Other Land made 100 % critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, which not only won the Best Documentary Oscar but also gripped critics and audiences alike with its heartbreaking look at life in the West Bank.

From the chaos of 1973 to the 2017 Best Picture blunder and now the Palestinian filmmaker scandal of 2025, the Oscars have shown that even the biggest global award franchise can stumble. However, as the Oscars 2026 are scheduled on 15th March, one cannot help but wonder, will the ceremony set new records for brilliance, or once again make headlines for all the wrong reasons?
