Hollywood may have its gods, but La Bola Negra has arrived to remind them that even Mount Olympus can have an unexpected visitor. Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s $15 million queer epic has collected a 20-minute standing ovation at Cannes, a Best Director win for its filmmakers, and the Toronto International Film Festival People’s Choice Award. Spain has now sent the film into the 2027 Oscar race as its official international-feature contender.

Yet the real drama may extend beyond that category. As La Bola Negra gathers momentum against The Odyssey, the awards race is shaping up like David versus Goliath, with a Spanish slingshot aimed straight at Hollywood’s epic-sized ambitions.

La Bola Negra threatens The Odyssey's Oscar chances

For all its mythological grandeur and blockbuster muscle, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey may have found an unexpected challenger that is playing an entirely different game. La Bola Negra, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, is building its case around emotional intimacy, passionate word of mouth, and the kind of human-centered storytelling that can make Academy voters swoon. It is the cinematic equivalent of bringing a slingshot to Olympus and somehow making the gods nervous.

The battle is also taking shape behind the camera, where Los Javis have emerged as serious competition for Nolan in the Best Director race. Their shared Cannes Best Director victory gives the Spanish filmmaking duo a major stamp of industry prestige, while the film’s reported strength across Best Picture and directing predictions suggests that its appeal could extend beyond the international-feature category. For La Bola Negra, that is a crucial distinction: it wants a seat at the main table, not merely a foreign-film consolation prize.

Then there is the campaign machinery, where Netflix appears ready to give its contender an unusually long theatrical window and a serious push for Oscar recognition. La Bola Negra also has potential routes into the acting, screenplay, and music races, with Penélope Cruz attracting supporting-actress attention and Guitarricadelafuente’s ‘La Nieve’ generating original-song buzz. If The Odyssey has the spectacle, Los Javis are betting that emotional impact and support across multiple categories can turn an underdog into a genuine Best Picture threat.

Yet even David had his work cut out for him against Goliath, and La Bola Negra has a few Achilles’ heels where The Odyssey holds the upper hand.

The Odyssey's winning cards

Of course, even the most charming underdog needs more than a standing ovation to topple a giant. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has the considerable advantage of blockbuster familiarity, having grossed over $1.7 billion worldwide, while its English-language spectacle may appeal to Academy voters less inclined toward subtitled cinema. For La Bola Negra, translating festival fervor into mainstream Oscar support is a far steeper climb.

Then there is the Academy’s historical reluctance to crown international films with its biggest prize, with Parasite remaining the sole non-English-language Best Picture winner. Netflix must also contend with lingering resistance to streaming releases, potential campaign distractions from Possible Love, and the cautionary precedent of Emilia Pérez. Whether La Bola Negra can defy those odds or The Odyssey will prevail remains the billion-dollar question in this David-versus-Goliath Oscar fairy tale.
