Conan O'Brien, the American television host, comedian and writer who has previously hosted the Oscars, will return to the stage once again, this time hinting at a special tribute for Rob Reiner, who tragically died alongside his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home on December 14, 2025. Speaking to Extra about the tribute, O’Brien admitted it would be difficult to truly sum up Reiner’s legacy in a single moment, but it is going to be a very powerful part of the show.
"Hard to sum up in this environment and would sound too piffy and weird to kind of sum it up here. I don't think it would be appropriate, but it's going to be a very powerful part of the show," O'Brien said to Extra on March 12.
Earlier on March 11, during a press conference, Oscars producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan revealed that the ceremony’s In Memoriam segment will be longer than in previous years, aiming to properly honor the many influential figures the film industry lost over the past year.
"I guess we can't really go into detail of what it's gonna be this year, but we really hope that it is a tribute that moves people and feels like it does the incredible people we've lost this year justice," Mullan said.
While the Oscars audience will have to wait to witness the tribute honoring Rob Reiner’s legacy, here’s a glimpse at the cinematic mark he left on Hollywood.
Inside Rob Reiner’s iconic contributions to Hollywood
American filmmaker Rob Reiner built an extraordinary legacy in Hollywood, earning acclaim for directing some of the most influential films of the late 20th century. His early success came with the cult mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap (1984), followed by The Sure Thing (1985). Reiner soon cemented his reputation with a remarkable run of genre-defining hits, including the coming-of-age classic Stand by Me, the beloved romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally, the chilling thriller Misery, and the gripping courtroom drama A Few Good Men.

However, following that remarkable list of classics, the last work Rob Reiner brought to Hollywood was Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, a long-awaited sequel to his iconic 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. The release renewed interest in Reiner’s filmmaking legacy, with platforms like Netflix also spotlighting his work by adding several of his classic films to its library, reminding audiences of the director’s enduring influence on modern cinema.
Now, as the 98th Academy Awards sets the stage with its expanded In Memoriam segment, especially with Conan O'Brien hinting at a tribute to Rob Reiner, fans can prepare to once again relive the legendary filmmaker’s timeless work on Hollywood’s biggest night.
