Charlie Sheen's life is not something hidden from the world, and this is true for the most intimate, vulnerable, as well as embarrassing parts. For years, his life history has been the embellishment of newspapers and TV news. In addition to his high-profile parts in movies like Wall Street and Platoon and his time as the highest-paid actor on television, he was involved in a number of scandals that culminated in a 2011 controversy that the world was unable to ignore. Now, everything has been packaged in Netflix’s two-part biographical documentary of the actor for the world to revisit.
However, the actor’s father will not be a part of this retelling of his life, and there is a pretty interesting reason behind it.

While talking to The Hollywood Reporter about his upcoming biographical documentary aka Charlie Sheen, the actor revealed that his father, veteran actor Martin Sheen, refused to be a part of the docuseries, citing a very good reason. He mentioned that the director of the doc, Andrew Renzi, approached him several times to appear at least in the second part of the series, but he stayed firm on his decision.
“Dad had such a specific reaction to it. He said, ‘You don’t need me. You don’t need the me of today. You’ve got the really interesting, handsome me. That’s how I want to be in the doc,’ ” said Sheen.
Apparently, Renzi was adamant about getting both his father and his big brother, Emilio Estevez, in the documentary and even showed them a rough cut of Part One in an effort to persuade them to feature in the second one, but it was to no avail. It was clearly not because of the quality of the doc that dictated their answer but because of personal reasoning, as suggested by Martin Sheen’s words.
The documentary, which is based on Charlie Sheen’s autobiography, The Book of Sheen: A Memoir, is divided into two parts - Part One, which tells the story of Sheen's idyllic childhood in Malibu, his ascent to fame, and his involvement in the Heidi Fleiss sex worker scandal; and the aptly named Part Deux, which pays homage to Sheen's Hot Shots! sequel and follows him in and out of rehab before revealing his HIV status.
Anyhow, Charlie Sheen’s documentary did not suffer from the lack of familiar faces telling the most intimate and personal stories, as his close childhood buddy rose to the occasion.
Charlie Sheen’s childhood friend becomes the treasure trove of information
It was Sean Penn, Charlie Sheen's childhood friend, who encapsulated both the younger years in Malibu and the more recent ones in Los Angeles. According to Andrew Renzi, Penn's knowledge was so comprehensive that he stopped contacting other Hollywood celebrities right away, and that interview acted as his anchor. Reviews for the documentary were largely favorable, but Renzi's favorite response came from the One Battle After Another Oscar winner.
“Sean Penn sent me a text and said, ‘You have made something that I have never seen before. It’s as unique and one-of-a-kind as Charlie Sheen is,’ ” Rezi revealed.

The documentary, aka Charlie Sheen, is available on Netflix to stream. The documentary is neither a highlight reel of terrible behavior nor an attempt to whitewash his reputation, despite being full of shocking revelations and unpleasant realizations. It follows Sheen's journey from his upbringing in Malibu to his rise to fame in Hollywood and the drug and alcohol-fueled downward spirals that almost killed him.
