Director Patrick Hughes and Alan Ritchson are not just hoping for a sequel; they have already brainstormed a massive expansion for the story. During a ScreenRant interview, Ritchson expressed his excitement about the wealth of material they have generated and about the future of the sequel to War Machine.

While the first film functions as a standalone narrative, Hughes admits that he cannot stop his mind from building larger worlds. He has already sketched out exactly where the journey goes next if the opportunity arises.

“If I ever got the opportunity to take it further, I know exactly where it's going, and I've sketched it out,” Director Patrick Hughes said, and he is simply waiting for the green light to pull the trigger on these new chapters.

"We know. We're not going to say, you got to stick around for the eight sequels," the actor teased regarding the long-term plan. By hinting at a series spanning eight sequels, Ritchson implies that the character of 81 has a complex history and future that can sustain decades of storytelling.

The mystery of the lead character is a deliberate choice inspired by the legendary archetypes of classic cinema.

Decoding the man with no name

The enigma of the character known only as 81 serves as the heartbeat of the tension within the film. Alan Ritchson remains tight-lipped about the specific backstory but suggests that the answers are worth the wait.  The chemistry between the lead actor and the director has fueled a creative fire that aims to pay homage to sci-fi classics.

“I fell in love with the character of 81, and the universe of sort of everything he's going through,” the director Patrick Hughes noted in the same ScreenRant interview. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the foundation for a long-running series is already firm.

Director Patrick Hughes drew heavy inspiration from the drifting angel archetype found in traditional Westerns, specifically echoing the Man with No Name. There was even an early draft of the script written entirely as a silent film to emphasize this stoic nature. The goal was to portray a warrior who finds self-love through a horrific baptism of fire.

“And there was a version of this film -- I wrote a version that was like a silent film”, he noted.

Debates even broke out on set regarding whether the character should ever receive a conventional name. The crew jokingly suggested the name Gerald, but the creators remained committed to the mystique of the silent soldier.
