The world today functions entirely differently when it comes to love and relationships. And if you throw physical intimacy into the mix, the whole situation becomes even more problematic. Everything has become too material and shallow - physicality has become transactional, love has become a hoax, and relationships are built on lies.

Fortunately, there are shows talking about this predicament, and Netflix just released one on its platform. Mating Season, an animated series about four friends - Josh the fox, Ray the raccoon, Fawn the deer, and Penelope the red fox - takes these four characters on a path to explore the true meaning behind love, s**, and relationships.

The series has successfully conveyed its message to a big audience, all of whom are now wondering if the show will return with a season 2.

Will there be a second season for Netflix’s Mating Season?

To be fair, it is quite early to answer this question as Mating Season has just released its first season on May 22. It has just been a week since its release, and Netflix has not yet officially announced a second season for the bawdy animated series. But the show has kept some doors open for a potential season 2 if the streamer decides to bring back the eccentric group of friends for a continuation of their story.

The Titmouse Inc.-produced Mating Season made a strong start on Rotten Tomatoes, standing at 67% among critics. However, streaming data has not yet been made public. It is hard to say if Netflix will continue the series for a second season or end it there. But Nick Kroll, who co-created the show with Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett, shared something about his hopes for the show in an interview with ScreenRant.

“We'll see how long they let us suck on the teat of that corporation,” Kroll said.

“But if my childhood is any predictor, it will be at least 12 years,” added Zach Woods, who plays Josh the fox, jokingly.

Mating Season, which was announced in April 2025 and released on Netflix on May 22, follows Josh the fox (Zach Woods), Ray the raccoon (Kroll), Fawn the deer (June Diane Raphael), and Penelope the red fox (Sabrina Jalees). Over ten episodes, the love and curiosity for s** and mating among these four buddies are explored. Although Kroll has indicated a desire to continue their escapades, it is unclear if their mutual passion for sensual pleasures will endure.

The creator surely wants to continue the series, but that entirely depends on the decision by Netflix and how the show sets up for a potential next chapter.

How Mating Season sets up for a second season

Josh, Ray, Fawn, and Penelope all reach their own inference about how love and relationships should start and finish by the end of Season 1. While Ray, Josh, and Fawn kind of get a definitive conclusion, for Penelope, the show concludes with a complex lover's dilemma between Jojo and Summer, leaving plenty of unanswered problems for a possible follow-up.

The makers can definitely introduce some new additions to the already amazing star cast to play new characters and expand the horizon of the story. There are endless possible ways to continue the series, but all of it can only come to fruition if Netflix greenlights season 2 of Mating Season.
