As reported by Variety, Tyra Banks has sued Netflix, 89 Blocks Holdings, EverWonder Studio, Netflix Music, and co-directors Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan, alleging false light, defamation by implication, breach of contract, and false endorsement. The lawsuit comes after her appearance in the documentary Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model. As per the complaint, Banks’ lawyers claim her interview showed only specific parts to create a false and defamatory narrative and misrepresent her comments.
The lawsuit states that Banks sat for a three-and-a-half-hour interview, but only 16 minutes of the footage made it into the documentary. According to the complaint, the 16-minute video was selectively edited to promote a false narrative. Her attorney further alleged that the chopped off segments primarily featured Banks acknowledging some of the issues of the show.
“That narrative about Ms. Banks is a complete fabrication—one that Netflix streamed to a global audience of millions,” the lawsuit read as per Variety.
The lawsuit further added that Banks was asked about an incident involving former contestant Shandi Sullivan without being told that Sullivan now described the incident as a s***** assault. The documentary allegedly edited Banks' hesitant response to make it appear as though she could not remember. However, the lawyers claimed that the full footage shows Banks admitting that she remembered the story.
Now, the show has been long in conversation, even for a rumor that the project was created for Tyra Banks to repair her reputation.
Debate on Tyra Banks in Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model
Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model began to draw attention even before its release. This documentary explored the behind-the-scenes experiences of former participants. However, the documentary also sparked speculation that it was created to repair former host Tyra Banks' public image. Addressing those claims, co-directors Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan said the project would have moved forward regardless of whether Banks agreed to participate.
“This documentary was happening, regardless if she was giving an interview or not, and she decided she did want to share her side of the story,” Loushy told TheWrap.
