Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates are no strangers to the pirate world and beyond. His dream of becoming the Pirate King by discovering Gol D. Roger's treasure, the One Piece, has intrigued fans around the world ever since Eiichiro Oda started the manga series in 1997. Just two years later, in October 1999, the manga's immense popularity led to an anime adaptation by Toei Animation.
Over the years, the anime continued to attract new fans, much like Luffy's own journey, as he formed new friendships while searching for the One Piece. Now, surprisingly, Netflix is set to introduce yet another anime adaptation of One Piece. If that sounds bizarre and confusing, here is everything to know about The One Piece remake and why Netflix is developing a new version despite the original anime still being on air.

Netflix's The One Piece is neither a sequel, prequel, nor a spin-off. Instead, it is a remake of Eiichiro Oda's original manga. The series will follow the same protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, as they start their journey across the East Blue in search of the One Piece treasure. The new anime will be a fresh retelling of the story rather than simply continuing the existing series.
However, there is a crucial reason behind Netflix's decision to produce a new adaptation.
Why Netflix is introducing a new animation, The One Piece?
More than two decades after the original anime adaptation, the One Piece franchise expanded further with One Piece, the live-action adaptation that premiered on Netflix in 2023. The live-action was a massive success on the streaming platform. After the success of its first two seasons, the series is set to return with a third season next year.
Meanwhile, a new animated adaptation of One Piece from the streaming platform could be another major win for both the franchise and Netflix. Interestingly, the success of the live-action series has also attracted many new fans who now want to explore the Straw Hats' journey from the beginning. However, binge-watching the entire anime might not be as easy as it sounds. The series is currently in its 21st season and has already aired 1,088 episodes.

As per CBR, watching every episode from the beginning would take more than 420 hours, around 18 days for an individual. However, the new animated series, The One Piece, will make it much easier for new viewers to catch up with the story and adventures. This will be a new retelling of the story right from the beginning, while staying true to the source material and animated series from Toei.
It will make Eiichiro Oda's One Piece more accessible to a new generation of audience. Moreover, several other aspects make it worth watching.
How is Netflix's The One Piece different from other animations?
Netflix's The One Piece will feature a modern storytelling approach and a much upgraded animation. The remake is being produced by Wit Studio, the acclaimed studio behind SPY x FAMILY and the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, which raises expectations for a visually superior adaptation. The series is being developed in collaboration with Shueisha, Fuji Television, and Toei Animation.
"The goal is to use modern animation technologies to bring the work back to life and make it accessible to a new generation of fans around the world. Our studio is not just remaking panels; this remake will be dense and impactful, without unnecessary stretching. It will combine visual enjoyment, strong storytelling, and flawless pacing," Wada said in an interview with the YouTube Channel, Ai Show.
Most importantly, the remake will offer a much more condensed adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's manga. George Wada has confirmed that the new anime will feature tighter pacing by removing unnecessary fillers and stretching. So, the new fans can easily watch the series without having to sit through fillers.
Netflix has already dropped some intriguing details of the first season of The One Piece.
How many seasons will Netflix's One Piece have?
Netflix's The One Piece is a new anime adaptation that will begin by covering the East Blue Saga, which is featured at the beginning of the original manga. The East Blue Saga also introduces a world where the legendary pirate Gold Roger's final words inspire a new era of piracy and Luffy's dream of finding the One Piece treasure. The first season is set to adapt the manga's first 50 chapters, introducing viewers to Monkey D. Luffy and the beginning of his journey to become the Pirate King.

Season 1 will consist of seven episodes. As of now, the combined runtime of the first season is approximately 300 minutes. The story will conclude with Luffy's encounter with Sanji, the talented sous-chef of the floating restaurant Baratie, which will set the next stage for Luffy and his friends' adventure. The One Piece is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in February 2027, with all seven episodes releasing simultaneously.
