Why Does Usopp Wear 3 Watches in 'One Piece' Live Action Season 2? Weird Fashion or Functionality?

A pirate's drip is more than fabric and leather; it is a map of secrets and a trove of sass. When it comes to Eiichiro Oda's One Piece, pirate fashion gets a quirkier upgrade, expanding its horizons beyond the fearnoughts, the tricorn hats, or eye patches. Striking a fine balance between courage and chaos, Usopp, the Straw Hats’ storyteller, carries a flair in his fashion, wearing gadgets that smell like secrets. Netflix's live-action adaptation meticulously translates Usopp's uniqueness onto the screens through the nuanced wardrobe and accessories like the three watches.

But what are the actual fuctionalities of Usopp's three watches?

One Piece's uncharted waters show that every tiny accessory holds a narrative that is ready to be shared. The three bulky watches strapped to Usopp's arm appear to be an extreme fashion choice that only the Straw Hats' storyteller can wear. However, in the world of live-action adaptation, odd accessories often hide clever meaning. In this case, it is Netflix's attention to detail that brought creator Eiichiro Oda's original artwork in the Color Walk Compendium 1 to life.

For initial viewers of Season 2, Jacob Romero Gibson donning three watches seemingly appeared to mimic G-Shock on steroids. But the detail actually traces back to Oda's Color Walk Compendium costume design, which shows Usopp wearing a similar cluster of devices. It actually comprises two watches and a compass-like gadget on his arm. Netflix's live-action costume team recreated this tiny visual reference as an Easter egg for dedicated fans.

The triple watches in blue, red, and green serve as a main design element that shows love for the manga's visual tradition. Prior to the streamer, the three watches on Usopp's upper arm had already appeared in the original 2002 One Piece anime poster, too. Netflix's attention to the gadgets thus increases the streamer's credibility within the cult fandom of One Piece

Moreover, a trio of gadgets seamlessly and humorously fits Usopp's big personality, even if it is meant to be only a stylistic choice of exaggeration: one to track time, one to measure direction or pressure, and one for navigation or calculations. The Grand Line presents dangerous sea conditions, which require sailors to learn their firing and aiming points as well as wind patterns for survival, as Usopp juggles fear and bravery in season 2 through Gibson.

Jacob Romero Gibson says Usopp grounds a reality of fear among supernatural courage

Jacob Romero Gibson, in an interview with EUR, reflected on his character, deeming him the dreamer on a quest to become a brave sea warrior. Despite having no supernatural abilities, Usopp champions the sea using bravado as a defense mechanism, and that is a power move on its own, per the actor.

“Working with his fear and still finding his bravery is absolutely one of the most important things that I think Usopp’s story offers to the world of One Piece [...] I don’t think he’s a malicious liar or storyteller. I think that these things are coming from a real, genuine place," Romero Gibson told EUR.
