In 2022, right when Netflix began talking about subscriber losses and major spending cutbacks, Raising Dion suddenly became one of the projects caught in the fallout. The series, backed by Michael B. Jordan both as actor and producer, had still been performing strongly on streaming charts, which made the cancellation hit even harder for fans. Even worse, the show ended right after teasing a dystopian future where an older armored Dion was preparing for a massive war against Pat’s evolved superpowered form.

The cancellation backlash only grew louder after cast member Sammi Haney revealed online that Season 2 had actually performed strongly and fans were heavily demanding another chapter. Led by Ja'Siah Young, Alisha Wainwright, Michael B. Jordan, and Jason Ritter, the series followed Dion’s gradual transformation from a kid discovering strange powers into a rising superhero battling the deadly Crooked Energy. But just when the story teased an older Dion stepping into a dystopian future war after Pat’s survival, Netflix abruptly ended the journey before fans could ever see where it was heading.

“Sad to say that Raising Dion is cancelled. Thank you for all of the amazing support we got from all of our wonderful fans." Hanney posted on her Instagram,

While the series was abruptly canceled by Netflix, had the show dived into Season 3, it would have explored the darkest chapter.

What Raising Dion season 3 could have turned into?

If Raising Dion had continued, showrunner Carol Barbee reportedly planned to fully explore the dystopian future teased during the finale’s shocking post-credits scene. The next chapter would have followed Dion’s evolution into the armored superhero warrior seen battling Pat’s army while also expanding the growing superhero trio between Dion, Janelle, and Brayden. Writers were additionally preparing to deepen the terrifying “Crooked Energy” mythology as it infected more hosts, a storyline many fans compared to the escalating Mind Flayer threat in Stranger Things.

Ironically, the cancellation arrived despite the series becoming one of Netflix’s strongest family sci-fi successes. Season 1 ranked among Netflix’s Top 10 most popular releases of 2019, while Season 2 reportedly pulled over 108 million viewing hours globally within its first few weeks despite a massive gap between seasons. The show additionally earned strong critical praise, multiple Emmy nominations, NAACP recognition, and widespread appreciation for casting Sammi Haney in a major action-heavy role, while much of the cast also walked away with a good salary.

And thus, while Netflix may have abandoned Dion’s unfinished superhero destiny inside one brutal cliffhanger, fans can still revisit both seasons of Raising Dion streaming on Netflix.
