Who Is Set to Rule the Ton in Season 5 of 'Bridgerton'? Find Out Whether Eloise or Francesca Will Take Center Stage
Among Bridgerton fans, guessing the next romantic lead has practically become a Regency sport. The moment a season ends, the ballroom chatter moves from weddings to predictions. Season 4 only fueled the ritual further, closing with Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Baek finally claiming their fairytale ending after overcoming class barriers and a particularly troublesome stepmother.
With Netflix treating Julia Quinn’s book order more like Regency suggestion than rule, Season 5 speculation now resembles the old hunt for Lady Whistledown, centering on Francesca Bridgerton and Eloise Bridgerton.

Both Eloise Bridgerton and Francesca Bridgerton presently hold convincing claims to headline Bridgerton Season 5. Showrunner Jess Brownell confirmed to Deadline that the two siblings will lead Seasons 5 and 6, though the order remains deliberately undisclosed. At the Season 4 premiere in Paris, Jess Brownell even wore a pocket square embroidered with the initials 'E' and 'F,' a playful signal that intensified speculation.
The biggest evidence for Eloise Bridgerton's case is Julia Quinn’s novel To Sir Philip, With Love, which follows Eloise Bridgerton’s romance with Sir Philip Crane. In the original book sequence, Eloise Bridgerton’s story appears before Francesca Bridgerton’s narrative, leading many readers to believe the series may finally return to that literary order.
Netflix, however, has already treated Julia Quinn’s sequence with admirable indifference. Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington advanced into matrimony before Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Baek reached their chapter, a decision that politely ignored the novels. Once that rule bent, the entire ballroom of predictions began rearranging itself.
The tip further tilts towards Francesca Bridgerton’s narrative, considering that she received unusually brisk attention in Season 4. Fast-tracking her storyline, season 4 moved through John Stirling’s death and introduced Michaela Stirling, positioning Francesca Bridgerton for a far more complex romance and a perfect setup for headlining this season. However, with Season 5 production expected around March 2026, and announcements usually arriving just before filming, the answer may arrive just in time to silence the drawing-room debate.
The rearranged romantic order has also reopened the long-running discussion about whether Bridgerton is adapting the novels or merely borrowing their spirit.
How loyal of a book adaptation is Bridgerton?
Bridgerton has long been described as being 'inspired by' Julia Quinn’s novels rather than functioning as a strict page-to-screen translation. The series retains the basic premise of one Bridgerton sibling finding love each season, yet Netflix has repeatedly expanded the narrative with new characters, altered timelines, and modern storytelling choices that the novels never attempted.
One of the most visible departures appears in the show’s worldbuilding. Julia Quinn’s novels depict a traditional Regency society, while the television adaptation introduces an alternate aristocratic landscape shaped by Queen Charlotte’s heritage, resulting in a racially integrated ton. The show also created entirely new figures such as Queen Charlotte, Prince Friedrich, Theo Sharpe, and Siena Rosso, all of whom now play memorable roles in the drama.

Despite these liberties, Julia Quinn remains involved as a consultant and has publicly supported the show’s creative freedom, explaining that television requires a broader storytelling canvas than traditional romance novels. That flexibility has only heightened curiosity around what comes next, especially as viewers eagerly attempt to uncover every possible clue about Bridgerton Season 5.
