Gaslit by My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story understands that brutality intimately, tracing how love can be weaponized behind closed doors. The film lingers on Morgan Metzer’s survival, her escape from a nightmare she once called marriage, but it leaves a chilling question hanging in the air: what became of the man who orchestrated it all?

Rodney Metzer’s story hardened into legal reality. After Morgan Metzer finalized their divorce in 2020, the illusion of distance was shattered almost immediately. Within days of the new year, violence rewrote everything. By January 3, 2021, authorities had charged Rodney Metzer with more than a dozen offenses tied to the assault, including aggravated assault, s***** battery, and kidnapping.

Prosecutors offered him a plea deal, one that would spare Morgan Metzer from reliving the trauma on the stand. He accepted, pleading guilty to 14 charges. In August 2021, the sentence landed with precision: 70 years in total, 25 years in prison, followed by 45 years on probation. He was also legally barred from ever contacting Morgan or their twins again.

Today, Rodney Metzer is incarcerated at Baldwin State Prison in Hardwick, Georgia. According to inmate records, he could be eligible for release on Dec. 31, 2045.

There is always a moment in stories like this where you ask how something so ordinary turned so irreparably dark.

From teenage love to a carefully constructed illusion

On screen, Gaslit by My Husband: A Morgan Metzer Story frames Rodney Metzer as a slow, unsettling reveal, a man whose charm curdles into control so gradually it almost feels imperceptible. Jana Kramer steps into Morgan Metzer’s perspective with a performance rooted in fragility and survival, while Austin Nichols portrays Rodney with measured restraint. Their story began like something deceptively ordinary.

What the film captures with eerie precision is the psychological unraveling. Through Nichols’ performance, Rodney’s behavior is manipulative and calculated. Morgan recalled on 48 Hours how he allegedly staged incidents to make her appear abusive, even convincing their children she had harmed him after he injured himself.

The movie’s most haunting sequence, the masked intruder using a distorted, almost theatrical voice, lands harder when you realize it was all planned. The New Year’s Day 2021 attack, recreated with chilling restraint, was the culmination of years of alleged manipulation and abuse. What Gaslit by My Husband does is compress that descent into something narratively coherent.

The comfort it gives one is the awareness that Rodney Metzer is no longer a figure hiding behind masks or manipulation; he is a convicted man serving decades in prison, his future defined by the very system he once tried to outmaneuver.
