What happened to Rachel Nickell?

Rachel Nickell, 23, was murdered on Wimbledon Common in south west London on July 15, 1992, while out walking with the family dog and her two-year-old son, Alex. The attack shocked Britain as it happened in broad daylight and in front of her young child, who became the only witness to the crime. She was s******* assaulted and stabbed 49 times, sparking one of the biggest murder investigations in British history.

The case became infamous not only for the violence of the crime but also for the police investigation that followed. The police’s original target was an innocent man, Colin Stagg, and they used a controversial undercover operation which fell apart in court. Years later, advances in DNA technology identified the real killer, Robert Napper, who in 2008 admitted responsibility for the killing.
