After nearly a decade since its 2016 debut, Stranger Things is closing the gate to the Upside Down, marking the end of a cultural phenomenon that grew up alongside its fans. The show depicted Hawkins’ transformation from a quiet town into a battleground of monsters and mysteries. Eleven found her power, friendships were tested, and villains like the Mind Flayer and Vecna redefined the stakes. Along the way, it also changed how the world watched Netflix, turning binge-watching into a global ritual.

And now, for fans who want one last thrill, the Upside Down is breaking out of living rooms and onto the big screen.

Netflix’s decision to bring the Stranger Things Season 5 finale to select theatres marks a rare move for the streamer. For the first time in its history, the theatrical showings will take place in more than 350-500+ participating cinemas (including major chains) beginning at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET on December 31. This is in alignment with the global Netflix release time. While the full list of participating theaters is available via the official site (e.g., ST5Finale.com) and through individual theater listings, the theatrical run is brief. It is limited to just New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

The rest of Season 5 (Episodes 1-7) is only available on Netflix and not part of the theatrical screenings. The two-hour plus final episode of Stranger Things Season 5, titled The Rightside Up, will premiere on December 31, 2025, simultaneously on Netflix and in select movie theaters across the United States and Canada. The event is a limited fan screening experience, running through January 1, 2026.

How to watch the Stranger Things Season 5 finale on the big screen

Contrary to what one might expect for a marquee event such as the Stranger Things finale, the ticket itself is effectively free. Rather than charging a traditional admission, participating theatres require purchasing a $20 food and beverage credit or concessions voucher valid on the day of your screening. That credit acts as your admission pass, and any unused portion can go toward snacks and drinks during the show.

Advance reservations are already open and seats are selling quickly, so securing a spot early is strongly advised. For avid fans, this is the culmination of long-running arcs. Eleven confronting Vecna, the gang racing to save Hawkins from the Upside Down, and Steve, Robin, and Eddie’s heroic moments all hit differently on the big screen.

Experiencing these pivotal moments collectively in a theater elevates every suspenseful twist, emotional reunion, and shocking betrayal that fans have been following since Season 1.
