A major chunk of Netflix's recently released Avatar: The Last Airbender, season 2, goes into the efforts to tell the Earth King about a major event that will lead to the war-waging Firebenders gaining a massive boost in their bending power. They were trying to inform the King of the Sozin’s Comet that gives immense power to the Firebenders. Notably, during its last appearance, the Air Nomads were completely wiped out except for the Last Airbender, Aang.
To save the Earth Kingdom and the people in it from suffering the same fate, Team Avatar not only tries to warn the King about the celestial event, but also finds a solution that will help defeat the Fire Nation before the event happens. It is when they find out about the Day of Black Sun - the perfect counter to Sozin’s Comet.
So, now a legitimate question arises: what is the Day of Black Sun, and how does it work in favor of Team Avatar?

The Day of Black Sun and its implications
Aang and his friends go into Wan Shi Tong's Spirit Library in episode five, titled Ten Thousand Things in an attempt to figure out how to beat Ozai and the Fire Nation. In the library, Toph meets Kyoshi's spirit, and she reveals to her that firebenders' abilities are intimately connected to the sun and celestial bodies like Sozin's Comet, alluding to the fact that there might actually be a day when firebenders are vulnerable the most.
It happens to be a solar eclipse, or as the firebenders like to call it, the Day of Black Sun, that eliminates their capacity to firebend, even though the comet significantly increases their bending - the ideal chance to retaliate against the Fire Nation. The Gaang also determines the precise time of the next Day of Black Sun using a celestial chart found in the library.
Given how happy everyone is with the news, it can be safely presumed that the next eclipse will occur soon, even though the audience has not been informed of the actual date. It will be crucial whether it occurs prior to or following Sozin's Comet's once-in-a-century fly-by. It should probably be the former, as the Gaang was persuading the Earth King to attack before the comet arrives, so this might indicate that the Day of Black Sun is coming before the comet.
However, the road to a full-scale attack on the Fire Nation anytime soon is heavily blocked post the season 2 finale.
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 finale changes things significantly
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 finale reveals that the city of Ba Sing Se has fallen into the hands of Azula without any military skirmishes or any resistance from the Earth Kingdom. It might be the greatest victory in the history of the Fire Nation, which has always relied on its fire and military might to take down its enemies.

Also, Aang’s fate is uncertain as he suffered a fatal lightning strike at the hands of Azula, and the last scene of season 2's conclusion shows him unresponsive even to the Water from the Spirit Oasis, which Katara got from the North Water Kingdom. In such circumstances, an all-out attack against the Fire Nation on the Day of Black Sun seems extremely difficult in season 3 of the series.
