An ordinary man’s life, from being a clueless young adult to slowly becoming entangled in power, wealth, and dangerous business, was never meant to be easy. However, Son-in-Law by Gerardo Naranjo takes its characters as well as the viewers on a chaotic and whirlwind ride. It raised several questions, confusion, and plenty of debate among those who have watched, but most importantly, curiosity for those who have yet to watch the movie.

After debuting in theatres in April, the film arrived on Netflix on May 1 and has quickly taken the platform by storm. With mixed reactions continuing to circulate online, here is whether the film is actually worth watching.

Son-in-Law is a sharp political satire drenched in chaos and madness, all revolving around its protagonist, Jose Sanchez, as he chases power at any cost. The film jumps across multiple timelines, tracing Sanchez’s journey from a clueless young man to someone who gets entangled in scandals, prisons, and even some bloodbaths. The tragic comedy movie keeps viewers guessing whether Sanchez is truly ambitious or simply in way over his head, while also exposing the cracks within a deeply broken system.

Without giving away any major spoilers, this movie is a wild ride through Sanchez’s dramatic rise and fall, packed with unpredictable, chaotic energy, and is well worth exploring. It is indeed an intriguing addition to the May line-up. Directed by Gerardo Naranjo, the film is written by James Schamus alongside Gabriel Nuncio and Alexandro Aldrete. Schamus, as many might know, previously contributed to Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon.

Apart from the story itself, it is the cast’s powerful performances, especially Adrián Vázquez as Jose Sanchez, that keep viewers hooked. Even amid the chaos and drama, Vázquez brings a strange yet convincing calmness that makes his character appear unsettling at times in the best way possible. It is clearly not an easy watch, but it is certainly a refreshingly unconventional and unpredictable storytelling.
