The BioShock movie has spent nearly two decades trying to make it out of development limbo. First announced as a film adaptation in 2008, the project hit a wall over its budget and R-rating requirements before Universal Pictures abandoned that version in 2013. Netflix revived the long-delayed adaptation in February 2022, but Rapture has remained out of reach for moviegoers ever since.

Now, after years of waiting, a promising update suggests the Netflix adaptation may finally be ready to leave development limbo behind.

The BioShock movie may finally be inching closer to production after years in development limbo. Speaking to The Direct during the press junket for his upcoming film The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, director Francis Lawrence confirmed that the Netflix adaptation remains in active development. Producer Roy Lee had previously told The Direct that the project was waiting for Lawrence to finish his latest trip to Panem.

"It's tricky. So we're getting there, and we're getting close, which is great," he said.

Lawrence explained to The Direct that adapting BioShock presents a unique challenge because players essentially become the protagonist. In the original game, Jack is a largely silent character whose thoughts and motivations remain unexplored as players navigate Rapture. Turning that blank slate into a fully realized cinematic lead requires building a character from scratch without losing the wonderfully bizarre appeal of the underwater dystopia.

However, the creative challenge is not the only obstacle lurking beneath the surface. Lawrence pointed to Netflix's recent leadership shake-ups, including Peter Rice replacing Bela Bajaria as Chief Content Officer and Dan Lin's departure as head of film. Despite these complications, the director remains eager to bring BioShock to the big screen, as seen from his talk to The Direct, expressing hope that the project can move forward without getting lost in the streaming giant's internal changes.

With Netflix shaking things up and even sending a KPop Demon Hunters sequel to theaters, one wonders whether BioShock is going to be Francis Lawrence's very next movie after The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Will the BioShock movie be Francis Lawrence's very next project?

Francis Lawrence may be ready to take audiences back to Rapture, but BioShock still has to win the race for his next directorial outing. Speaking to The Direct, Lawrence explained that filmmakers often have several projects moving through development at once, and choosing the next one is not always a matter of picking a favorite. Sometimes, the movie that gets made first is simply the one whose pieces fall into place.

A finished script, available actors, and a suitable filming season can all change the pecking order, Lawrence noted. One project might be creatively ready but miss its chance to shoot, while another suddenly becomes easier to schedule. So, while BioShock remains firmly on Lawrence’s radar, its place in his production queue is far from assured.
