Two Sides of a Coin: Set In ‘Euphoria’s’ Universe, The Weeknd’s ‘The Idol’ Hits a 10% Low on Rotten Tomatoes After Cannes Screening

Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd are set to bring their drama series The Idol on
the screen next month. With the hype surrounding this much-awaited project, fans
thought this would be quite thrilling, considering it was helmed by the famous
director of Euphoria. But one certainly cannot decide on those things until it
gets screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Well, it turns out that the show was
not even a bit near the buzz it created on social media.

Rotten Tomatoes recently rated The Idol 10% on their website following the
premiere of the first two episodes at Cannes. The official page of Pop Base
shared the news on Twitter about how the show went down in flames. Now the show
is facing backlash for the dark theme depicting the struggles of a budding pop
star.

The rage is quite understandable since people had huge expectations from The
Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp. Not to mention, fans believed it would be a massive
success because it was directed by Sam Levinson. The filmmaker who created the
highly acclaimed teen drama Euphoria. We all know that this American series has
left an unparalleled impression on viewers building a devoted fandom in the past
two seasons.

Fans are even more disgusted with the portrayal of BLACKPINK’s Jennie Kim, whom
they have always loved. Even Variety called it “smarmy as anything HBO has ever
produced,” in their reviews for all the raunchy scenes it includes.
