Survival films have a unique way of revealing what true perseverance and grit could really look like. Faced with impossible life-or-death situations, ordinary people are forced to rely on their instincts, the resources around them, and most importantly, their determination to stay alive. The stakes become even higher when the fight for survival takes place thousands of feet in the air.
When stranded aboard a plane, people are pushed to their physical and emotional limits, exposing both the best and the worst of human nature. Netflix has leaned into the tale of terror and survival, housing two thrilling survival films. And these stories are not just about the unseen dangers but also about the strength of the human spirit and the refusal to surrender, even when survival seems difficult.

The film was massively praised for its powerful portrayal of human solidarity and the emotional toll of survival. What makes the story even more haunting is that Society of the Snow is based on the real-life 1972 Andes flight disaster. Directed by J. A. Bayona, the film follows a Uruguayan rugby team, along with their supporters, whose flight crashes on a glacier in the Andes Mountains.
Of the 45 people on board, several were killed on impact, while others later succumbed to their injuries, avalanches, and the brutal conditions. The remaining survivors were left stranded in freezing temperatures with almost no food or shelter, forcing them to make unimaginable decisions as they waited for rescue. The cast includes Enzo Vogrincic, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Tomás Wolf, and Diego Vegezzi.
Another incredible plane-crash survival film in Netflix's library of survival stories is a 2012 movie.
Denzel Washington’s 2012 film on Netflix is a brilliant watch
Flight remains one of the biggest critical and commercial successes of Denzel Washington's career. The film grossed more than $160 million worldwide and earned two Academy Award nominations, including a Best Actor nomination for Washington for his powerful performance. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by John Gatins, the film follows William "Whip" Whitaker Sr., an airline pilot battling alcoholism. After a catastrophic mechanical failure, Whip performs a near-miraculous emergency landing that saves nearly everyone on board, making him a hero.

However, his celebrated act of bravery soon comes under scrutiny when investigators find evidence suggesting he was under the influence of alcohol on the aircraft. Washington is joined by Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly, John Goodman, Bruce Greenwood, Brian Geraghty, and Tamara Tunie for the film. Whether inspired by true events or fictionalized drama, both films are powerful reminders of humanity's courage and will to keep going against impossible odds.
