Miyako Cech has opened up about the insecurities she faced while taking on the role of Toph in Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2. Cech is unafraid to speak her mind, and it is much like her character, the fan-favorite earthbender, who is also known for her brutal honesty. Toph serves as both a tough mentor and a mean older-sister figure to Aang.

But bringing the iconic character to life came with its own challenges for Cech. The actress has since reflected on the pressure of playing such a beloved role and the challenges she experienced along the way.

Born blind, Toph Beifong is an earthbending master who plays a crucial role in Aang’s journey and the team’s success. Initially underestimated because of her blindness, she overcame every challenge and mastered advanced earthbending techniques. Miyako Cech, also known as Miya, who is set to portray Toph in Avatar: The Last Airbender, revealed that one of her biggest insecurities while preparing for this role was learning how to accurately portray a fully blind character.

“Learning how to portray a fully blind character was one of the biggest insecurities I had about this role,” she said in a behind-the-scenes clip released by Netflix.

Cech was determined to overcome her insecurities, and her dedication and commitment were evident throughout the process, as executive producer Ryan Halprin shared in the clip. Executive producer Christine Boylan further revealed that the actress worked closely with blindness consultant Joe Strechay to do justice to the character. For nearly all of her scenes, Strechay was on set, helping guide her performance.

From her movements and senses to Toph’s earthbending abilities, Strechay provided support and guidance throughout filming. Moreover, the special lenses Cech wore to portray Toph significantly limited her vision, creating another challenge for the actress. However, much like her on-screen crew, including Aang, her co-stars, and the production team supported her throughout this time.
