A month back, Hollywood stood on uneven ground. The entertainment capital of the world was itself left in the lurch as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes struck back-to-back, delaying several core productions across several studios, including Netflix. The streaming giant found itself in murky waters with the progress bar on its popular projects such as The Witcher going on indefinite hold. Yet, as the strikes receded, so did a breath of relief seeped in. Moreover, days after several productions received filming green lights, the fourth season of the fantasy, too, received an update.

Amid a leading role cast change, all eyes now land on Netflix to course-correct previous shortcomings.

Months after Henry Cavill exited The Witcher, and it slumped to record lows, Netflix is back to the drawing board. Passing over the sword to Liam Hemsworth, the streaming giant has finally started taking steps towards the show’s revival. A report from Redanian Intelligence, has revealed that full-fledged pre-production work on season four of The Witcher would resume from January 2024. The developments come close on the heels of Netflix fast-tracking Stranger Things and lining up Wednesday.

The reports also highlight the pattern of developments being similar to the previous season. Incidentally, season three of The Witcher began pre-production in January 2022 and made way for the screens in June 2023. If a similar trend is followed, then the fourth season would likely not see the light of the day until mid-2025. Moreover, the coming season would mark the show’s first iteration without Henry Cavill and may have Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer and Freya Allan’s Ciri take center stage.

Along the lines of The Witcher: Blood Origin and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, Netflix has plans for another spin-off set to drop before season four. The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, an anime movie based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story, A Little Sacrifice, will air sometime in late 2024. The movie will fit itself somewhere between the episodes of the first season.

Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan reprise their roles for the spin-off while Essi Daven will voice Christina Wren. Meanwhile, the voice for Geralt of Rivia would come from Doug Cockle. The voice actor has previously played Geralt in all three of the Witcher video games. As far as the main show stands concerned, no further details on Liam Hemsworth’s takeover have come from Netflix.
