Molly Windsor as Rosie

According to Netflix Tudum, the BAFTA-winning actor Molly Windsor has portrayed Rosie as a woman navigating extreme circumstances with a universal sense of morality.

“Once her eyes have been opened, she can’t go back to how she thought before,”  Windsor noted. This journey of self-discovery led Rosie into a risky affair that challenged her very survival.

Rosie lived a sheltered existence defined by modesty and strict adherence to the fellowship’s rigid moral codes. Her perspective changed completely after she met Sam, an outsider who rescued her young daughter, Grace, from drowning. This encounter ignited an intense connection that forced her to question every rule she had ever followed.

Rosie's husband on the other hand, is a devoted follower struggling to balance his public religious duties with the private torment of his hidden identity.

Asa Butterfield as Adam

Asa Butterfield played Adam as a man desperately trying to be the ultimate devotee to mask his true feelings. He found the otherness of the newcomer Sam, to be intoxicating and confusing, which further complicated his rigid world.

Despite his outward displays of piety, Adam grappled with a deeply buried internal crisis regarding his s*********. His inclination towards this sliver of difference is hidden by his acts as a devout member of the community, going above and beyond to maintain his rapport. Violence, on the other hand, seems to be his go-to defense mechanism, be it against his own wife or brother.

The odd point of commonality in the couple's life comes in the for of an escaped convict used his talent for deception to weave himself into the fabric of the fearful community.

Fra Fee as Sam

Fra Fee has portrayed Sam as a reactionary survivor who possesses an uncanny ability to exploit the weaknesses of others. Fee explained to Tudum that the character operated in a grey area, where his intentions were often left open for any type of perception.

“There always had to be room for an alternative intention,” Fee explained.

Sam arrived as an escaped convict who had been incarcerated since his teenage years for a violent crime. He managed to integrate himself into the fellowship with ease, using his intelligence to become a respected figure. While he maintained a secret affair with Rosie, he also flirted with Adam to secure his social standing.

Moving a little further, the leader’s wife is shown facing a moral crisis as she witnessed the cruelty inflicted upon her fellow members.

Siobhan Finneran as Mrs. Phillips

Siobhan Finneran described her character’s experience through the lens of the restrictive, shapeless uniforms they were forced to wear. She felt that the lack of color and expression served as a constant tool of community control.

Mrs. Phillips occupied a position of status as the wife of the cult leader, yet she lived in quiet desperation. She frequently turned a blind eye to the systemic abuse her husband inflicted upon the members of the compound. Her heart remained heavy as she mourned the loss of her son, who had previously fled the fellowship.

At the top of the chain, a powerful patriarch is shown ruling his followers with an iron fist while hiding his own moral decay.

Christopher Eccleston as Mr. Phillips

According to Tudum, Christopher Eccleston viewed Mr. Phillips as a man who was both a victim and a perpetrator of extreme religious indoctrination. He believed that being raised within the organization had fundamentally corrupted the leader’s moral compass from childhood.

“I believe he was brought up within that organization, so he’s been indoctrinated since he was a child and he’s never known anything else,” Eccleston said.

Mr. Phillips reigned as the authoritative leader of the cult, frequently abusing his power over the vulnerable members. He acted inappropriately with female followers, believing his position shielded him from any earthly or divine consequences.

There is also Adam's brother, the family black sheep, facing severe consequences for his attempts to connect with the modern world.

Aston McAuley as Isaac

The relationship between the two brothers was described as a Cain and Abel dynamic by the creators. While Adam climbed the ranks of the cult, Isaac descended into the status of a social pariah for following his heart. His attempt to find happiness beyond the compound walls resulted in disastrous consequences for his personal relationships.

Isaac found himself cast out and abused by the community simply for possessing a mobile phone, a tool of the outside world. As the brother of the devout Adam, his rebellion created a sharp and painful divide within the family.
