Netflix’s latest psychological thriller, The Last House, has quickly become a global streaming obsession. With its suffocating atmosphere, brilliant ensemble cast, and a mind-bending mystery that defies easy answers, the series leaves viewers with plenty to unpack long after the credits roll.

At the center of the narrative is the Delgado family, whose desperate attempt to find safety turns into an endless, geometric nightmare. But as the terrifying layers of the story peel back, the central question shifts from how they will escape to a much more haunting inquiry: What is actually keeping the Delgado family trapped?

After spending most of its running time persuading us that whatever lies outside the Delgado family's walls is uncaring, The Last House concludes on an unexpectedly compassionate note. Jason, Ann, Graham, and Ruth start out with an almost ridiculously common issue: they are trapped inside their Seattle house while a never-ending downpour blocks all of their escape routes. 

Doors will not move, windows will not break, communication stops, and the neighbors across the street are also stuck. The family is forced to ration food, develop increasingly desperate survival techniques, and watch their once-comfortable home decay around them as what at first appears to be a brief nightmare drags on for years.

They established a self-sufficient lifestyle inside the home, which allowed them to endure throughout the five years they had been stuck in their home. But when an animal bites their daughter, their situation changes. Getting medication from the outside world is the only option to save her.

The family learns that the underground pipes are connected to the outside world while looking for a route out. In an attempt to find the medication, Ruth, the family's matriarch, chooses to crawl through them. She finds what she needs and makes it to the outdoors, but on the way back, she encounters a massive sea creature. Ruth manages to somehow escape after an intense struggle.

The family realizes after the life-threatening incident that they cannot remain stuck indefinitely. They have to fight their way out in order to survive. Together, they set out to combat the sea creature. They are still unable to unlock the locked doors, even though they are able to contain the sea creature. 

The family's father, Jason, threatens to kill the creature if it does not unlock the door. However, he then realizes that the creature has merely been defending its home for all these years, just like him. Jason releases it by cutting the cords rather than killing it. That kindness is rewarded. The creature allows the family to escape and lets the door open. It even communicates with other creatures outside to indicate that the Delgados are deserving of survival. The Delgado family is finally free from captivity, but it might not be all that they thought.

They quickly learn, though, that there are no more survivors. The Delgado family boards their fishing boat and sets off to seek life because they have nothing else to do. Concerned about whether any survivors remain, they keep calling out over the radio. They hear a weak, warped voice just before the movie closes, suggesting that they might not be the sole survivors after all.

The family survives, but the ending does not really answer all the questions viewers might have from the story. The origins of the creatures, the start of the rain, and the years-long sealing of homes are never satisfactorily explained. Instead of a strong sci-fi solution, the film favors an environmental allegory about empathy, fear, and adaptation. It is likely that viewers will be evenly split on that choice.

As the titles roll, the timestamp resets to "Day 1" of their new existence outside, leaving ample opportunity for a possible follow-up. It remains to be seen if Netflix will approve a sequel to The Last House and whether the original cast returns to carry on the Delgados' tale in this bizarre new post-apocalyptic world, but it has obviously been left open.
