The Boroughs creators, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, have finally left the crumbs needed for future seasons after the finale chaos. After unleashing underground monsters, eerie deaths, and psychological horror across Netflix, the creators confirmed several unanswered mysteries were deliberately left hanging for what comes next. The tight-knit Boroughs community may have survived Season 1, but the scars and secrets are far from over.

The Boroughs creators have unveiled the wheels behind the finale cliffhanger, Sam’s glitching mystery, and the future seasons hiding behind that cracked-open door.

The finale of The Boroughs may have looked like Mother’s ending, but creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews revealed it was actually the beginning of something much bigger. After Mother exploded inside the cave while saving Sam from Blaine, the creators hinted that her powers may stretch far beyond what viewers saw in Season 1. Addiss later admitted the moment was heavily inspired by E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, describing it as a scene of “rebirth” and regeneration while teasing that Mother’s abilities could become far more dangerous and emotional in future seasons.

“But, it’s very much an E.T. moment that we think of, but it’s the first moment, even beyond that, where you go like, ‘Oh, Mother might have powers, even beyond what we’re seeing.’” Addiss told Deadline.

The creators also finally addressed Sam’s disturbing mirror “glitching” scene during the finale ending. According to Addiss, the effect symbolised hidden transmission signals tied directly to Mother’s mysterious SOS broadcasts throughout the season, with old TVs and radios becoming part of the show’s deeper mythology. However, the creators intentionally refused to reveal why Sam glitches, confirming the mystery is directly connected to where the story heads next. Matthews additionally revealed that The Duffer Brothers advised them not to overload the finale with cliffhangers, instead telling them to “tell a whole story and crack the door” open carefully for future seasons.

And while The Boroughs arrived wrapped inside retirement-home silence and desert calm, the Netflix series quickly mutated into one of 2026’s creepiest sci-fi mystery explosions.

Netflix’s ‘The Boroughs’ turns retirement horror into Sci-Fi chaos

The Boroughs officially premiered on Netflix on May 21, 2026, bringing a bizarre supernatural mystery from creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the minds behind The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Backed by The Duffer Brothers as executive producers, the eight-episode series has already been described online as “Cocoon meets The Goonies” and even a geriatric version of Stranger Things. Set inside an upscale retirement community hidden in the New Mexico desert, the story follows elderly residents discovering that a horrifying creature is secretly stealing the one thing they have the least of, time itself.

The series is led by a heavyweight cast including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O'Hare, Bill Pullman, and Clarke Peters as a chaotic group of senior citizens forced into monster-hunting survival mode. Behind the scenes, production designer Ruth Ammon reportedly built the entire neighbourhood practically inside Albuquerque, while the soundtrack, curated by Stranger Things music supervisor Nora Felder, loads the series with classic tracks from legends like David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen.

And now, with The Boroughs already cracking open bigger mysteries beyond its terrifying finale, the Netflix horror series seems far from done unleashing monster chaos, emotional trauma, and supernatural paranoia inside the desert community.
