'Stranger Things' to Dethrone This Fantasy Drama to Become the Most Expensive TV Show of All Time

Hawkins, Indiana, has produced legends, and Stranger Things is chief among them: an ensemble cast that dazzles, a narrative that clutches the chest, villains that decay just for the sole purpose of invoking horror, and Demodogs that could inspire therapy bills. The series revels in excess and adores extremes. It is impossible to ignore that it now eyes a new pinnacle, one dripping in gold and ambition, because mere greatness is no longer sufficient for the children of Hawkins, with them being fans of superlatives.

Stranger Things is preparing to unseat a fantasy series and claim the title of the most expensive television show production ever.

Even at the height of the streaming wars, when platforms were aggressively investing in exclusive content, the budget for Stranger Things season 5 is turning heads. A report from Kim Masters of Puck suggests the final season could cost between $50-60 million per episode, placing it in direct competition with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which reportedly spent $58 million per episode for its first season. If confirmed, Stranger Things may dethrone the fantasy epic as the most expensive television show.

It has been over three years since season 4 premiered and more than six since season 3. Netflix will release season 5 in three parts: the first four episodes on November 26, the next three on December 25, and the finale on December 31. With just 17 episodes over six and a half years, Puck noted that Stranger Things maintains a rare cultural impact despite a surprisingly lean episode count.

It would come as no shock to fans that Stranger Things is set to break the budget ceiling, the reason practically screams itself.

Why will Stranger Things season 5 be so costly?

Stranger Things season 5 demands a monumental budget for reasons that are as tangible as Hawkins is haunted. The climactic battle against Vecna and the Upside Down requires extensive CGI for massive rifts and particle simulations, alongside meticulously crafted practical effects for the creatures. Each episode is being filmed as a cinematic event, with the Upside Down fully invading Hawkins. Longer production timelines due to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, coupled with period-accurate 1980s sets, costumes, vehicles, and music, further inflate costs.
