Netflix’s hit sci-fi drama Stranger Things has been named International Series of the Year at the 2026 SEC Awards, adding to a string of major awards for the acclaimed series. The award recognizes the series’ global popularity, critical acclaim, and lasting cultural influence nearly a decade after its 2016 debut. This latest accolade comes as anticipation builds for the next installment of the franchise.

Since its 2016 debut, Stranger Things has evolved from an unlikely breakout hit into one of Netflix’s defining original shows. Additionally, each season attracted large audiences and generated much discussion around the world.

Its streaming numbers are record-breaking, which demonstrates that the show is a hit. Stranger Things has appeared in the platform’s Global Top 10 list 78 times in 93 countries since the rankings launched in 2021, and Stranger Things 4 is one of the most-watched English-language seasons in Netflix history, according to Netflix. Nevertheless, its record-breaking success is rooted in more than just impressive viewership numbers.

How Stranger Things became a global phenomenon?

Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, Stranger Things follows the mysterious disappearance of a young boy, Will Byers, which exposes a web of government secrets and supernatural forces. They seek answers from their loved ones, and eventually come across a mysterious girl known as Eleven who possesses exceptional telekinetic abilities. This takes them to a scary parallel universe called the Upside Down, where there are dangerous creatures living that pose a threat to their world.
