'Stranger Things’ Secret Episode Stays ‘Secret’ Forever, Hoax Causes Netflix an Unforgettable Hiccup

Published 01/07/2026, 11:06 PM EST

Netflix faces a glitch as epic as its sci-fi crown jewel, Stranger Things. The finale of Season 5, released on December 31, 2025, brought to an end almost ten years of supernatural adventure and emotional upheaval for Hawkins' beloved characters. However, the streamer app experienced a notable malfunction after the finale premiere.

The last chapter, The Rightside Up, was not only streamed on Netflix worldwide but also got a limited theatrical release, hence turning into a global event. But social media sleuths had theories compelling enough to make everyone believe there was more to come.

What really transpired when fans were convinced that Netflix had another Stranger Things surprise in store is one for the history books.

A secret Stranger Things episode brings its own house down

Netflix faced a major crash due to the wild fan speculation that a secret final episode of Stranger Things might be dropping at 8 PM ET on January 7, 2026, although the official finale had already premiered on December 31, 2025. This anticipation resulted in spikes of traffic and confusion on the streaming platform.

The streamer had briefly crashed as millions of Stranger Things fans attempted to log in, thinking that there was a hidden bonus episode beyond the official finale. Social media was rampant with screenshots of errors and connectivity problems experienced by viewers trying to watch an episode that does not exist.

A conspiracy theory that went viral, called the Conformity Gate, fuelled the hype of a 'true finale', asserting that The Rightside Up ending was nothing but a trick or a partial story and that a secret ninth episode could be on the way. Fans cited slight visual discrepancies and mysterious imagery, and even Morse codes, as clues that something more was yet to be revealed.

Nevertheless, Netflix stated that all official episodes of Stranger Things are currently streaming, and a hidden installment is not on the way. The rumored secret episode was never part of the show’s distribution plan. On the brighter side, Stranger Things will be moving on to greater things.

Everything to know about Stranger Things spin-offs

Stranger Things has officially wrapped up with its Season 5 finale on Netflix, but the saga is not over yet. The new projects in the expanded universe are already confirmed on Netflix by the creators Matt and Ross Duffer.

An animated spinoff titled Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, in the style of the 80s' cartoons, is also on the way. Moreover, the Duffer brothers have already been working on several spin-off projects with new characters and fresh storylines completely different from the original Hawkins crew.

“You’re starting with new characters. It’s like [a] clean slate. You’re not tied up into any knots. There’s something refreshing about it. The hope is you’re not just doing something to just do it. And Netflix has been surprisingly patient, although I think now, I feel that patience wearing thin a little bit with the show coming to an end. But they’re understanding," Matt Duffer told Variety about their plans on the spin-offs.

Furthermore, there is a behind-the-scenes documentary premiering January 12, 2026, on Netflix titled One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5. It chronicles the filming of season 5 and how it rewired pop culture forever.
