'Stranger Things' Prequel Series 'Other Worlds': Netflix Confirms 2028 Release, 1955 Setting and More
A generation grew up in Hawkins, Indiana, and Netflix is apparently not prepared to let it move on. After five seasons of monsters, missing children, government conspiracies, and enough Christmas lights to bankrupt a hardware store, Stranger Things reached its end in early 2026. Yet Matt and Ross Duffer have another trick up their sleeves, announcing prequel Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure with an eerily musical teaser that feels suspiciously like an invitation back into the nightmare.
Naturally, one cannot simply hear that familiar tune and resist opening the gate again. With 1955 setting, a 2028 premiere, and a fresh creative team, here is everything to know about Netflix's next trip into the supernatural.

The next trip into the supernatural will take a little patience, as Netflix has pencilled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure in for a 2028 premiere. Production is set to take place in New Mexico, with longtime franchise writer Kate Trefry steering the prequel as its showrunner, writer, and co-creator. Apparently, opening this particular gate requires a little more time.
Behind the camera, Joe Wright, known for Atonement and Pride & Prejudice, will executive produce and direct the first three episodes. Matt and Ross Duffer, Shawn Levy, Paul Dichter, Shelley Meals, Andrea Sperling, and Pavlina Hatoupis round out the executive-producing lineup, helping bring a 1955-set mystery to life, decades before Eleven and her friends ever encountered the horrors lurking beneath their world.
What the Stranger Things prequel will be about?
Forget Hawkins for a moment, because this mystery begins much further west, on April 19, 1955, in the desert town of Marion, Nevada. Set three decades before Eleven and her friends entered the picture, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure explores a corner of the franchise mythology that has remained tantalizingly unexplained. The story also predates the events of the 1959 stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
More importantly, Matt and Ross Duffer are finally digging into what young Henry Creel discovered in the Nevada caves, including the mysterious glowing substance that infected him and the scientist who died there. The teaser offers further clues, with a wormhole-like disturbance splitting the night sky to the tune of The Chords' 1950s hit ‘Sh-Boom’. Add the Duffers' warning to "watch the skies, nerds!" and an intriguing new cast becomes the next mystery to solve.
Who is the Stranger Things prequel?
As for who will be investigating the strange goings-on in Marion, Nevada, viewers can expect an entirely new ensemble. Netflix has confirmed that the prequel will introduce a fresh set of characters, meaning familiar faces such as Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, and David Harbour will not be making the trip back into this particular corner of the mythology. The Hawkins gang, it seems, can sit this one out.

Casting, however, is still the next big piece of the puzzle. When announcing the series, in their press release, the Duffer Brothers cheekily declared, "Now, on to casting." With the 1955 mystery officially taking shape, the creators are preparing to introduce an entirely new generation of characters to the ever-expanding Stranger Things universe.
