Eleven's iconic pink dress from Stranger Things is officially heading to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, making the supernatural drama the first Netflix original to earn a permanent place in the institution. The moment marks a cultural milestone for a series that already rewrote streaming history in more ways than one — from becoming Netflix’s first true global original-series phenomenon and the streamer’s first wholly owned breakout franchise to pioneering its massive consumer-products licensing business.
While Eleven spent years claiming her power on screen, her pink dress is now claiming its place in American history.

Eleven's pink dress from Season 1, Episode 4 of Stranger Things is now part of the permanent national collection at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, making the show the first Netflix original to achieve this distinction. The costume, designed by Kimberly Adams and Malgosia Turzanska, was announced at a Netflix FYC event held at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Creators Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, director Shawn Levy, and several cast members were all present when entertainment curator Ryan Lintelman made the announcement.
"This costume so brilliantly illustrates Eleven's journey to discover herself and claim her power," said entertainment curator Lintelman at the event.
Lintelman then added that "When she first puts on the dress and a blonde wig, Eleven remarks that she looks pretty, a major step on her journey to self-awareness and empowerment," underlining just how much storytelling weight one outfit can carry.
The pink dress carries cultural weight that extends well beyond the fictional town of Hawkins. Lintelman highlighted that Stranger Things explored deeply resonant themes: skepticism of authority, the belief that ordinary individuals can drive change, and the unique ability of young people to perceive truths that adults overlook. The dress became one of the most replicated Halloween costumes of the 2016 season, a moment that also launched the show's now-massive consumer products empire spanning toys, games, live experiences, and clothing.
As the dress finds its forever home in a museum, the Stranger Things universe itself is far from ready to collect dust.
What comes next in the Stranger Things universe
The Stranger Things spinoff has been in development since 2022, and the Duffer Brothers are in absolutely no rush to deliver it. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the duo made their philosophy unmistakably clear: the spinoff must be excellent, or it simply does not happen. The new series will feature an entirely fresh set of characters with no Eleven, Mike, Dustin, or any original Hawkins crew member at its center. It will not follow an anthology format either, firmly separating it from comparisons to Black Mirror.

The upcoming live-action spinoff is set in a different decade and town, building its own mythology while tying up loose ends from the Season 5 finale. Fans who cannot wait already have Stranger Things: Tales from '85, an animated series released on Netflix on April 23, 2026, already been renewed for a second season. The Duffer Brothers have built something rare enough to sit in a museum and smart enough to keep audiences hungry for more.
