shift in his direction with Netflix’s All the Light We Cannot See. The Stranger

the director acknowledged the timely and significant themes of humanity,
empathy, and seeing people as individuals and how these themes felt resonant
while filming in Budapest during the Ukraine conflict. Further, with the ongoing
Israel-Palestine conflict, these themes still stand strong. While Levy finds the
happenings of the Middle East “heartbreaking,” he shared how he is also
“grateful” that the show released now.



The cast and crew of the Netflix Original were filming the series in Budapest
during the crisis in Ukraine. Filming there brought out the overwhelming effects
of the themes, as Levy admitted. And now, the current situation in the Middle
East deepened the darkness in the world. Acknowledging that Levy revealed, it
would have been easy to sink into sadness, hopelessness, and heartbreak.
However, as the show represented and Shawn Levy also admitted, “We have to cling
to humanism and hope.”
